[01] Cyprus and the EU sign three finance agreements

The Minister of Finance, Mr.Takis Klerides in a ceremony that took place at the Ministry of Finance yesterday, August 7, 2000 in the presence of the Ambassador of the European Commission, Mr. D. Chiarini, signed within the framework of the Fourth Financial Protocol Cyprus-European Union, three financing agreements.

The first Agreement amounting to 1.400.000 ŇURO aims at the Financing of the Participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the Fifth Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration activities.

The second Agreement amounting to 1.400.000 ŇURO is intended for the harmonisation with the Acquis Communautaire.

The third Agreement amounts to 2.424.000 ŇURO (EU contribution: 1.975.000 ŇURO, Cyprus contribution: 449.000 ŇURO), for the "Development of Civil Society".

The first two Financing Agreements aim at supporting Cyprus efforts in its path towards the accession to the European Union.

The first Financing Agreement will facilitate the participation of Cypriot companies and research entities to the RTD programme of the European Union. This programme allows the creation or strengthening of links between training and research establishments in Cyprus and the European Union. The second Agreement will partly cover the needs arising from the main categories of measures included in the sectorial harmonisation programmes. This involves (the setting up of the new and the enhancement of existing institutional/ organisational structures, (2) the training of public sector officials in familiarising themselves with the procedures required for effectively implementing the acquis and (3) the promotion of administrative co-operation with the European Union.

The third Agreement, 2.424.000 EURO, will foster the development of civil society at this crucial stage of negotiations for the settlement of the Cyprus problem. This will encourage activities aiming at bi-communal interaction and co-operation. This should meet the common interest of the two communities on the island.

The said Financing Agreements, which were concluded after negotiations between the relevant authorities of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union, have already been signed on behalf of the European Union by the Commissioner for Enlargement, Mr. Gunter Verheugen.
