[01] President Clerides meets with the Patriarch of Alexandria

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides, who is in Egypt for a six-day private visit, had a meeting yesterday with Patriarch Petros VII of Alexandria and all Africa, at Saint George's Monastery in Cairo.

During the meeting, the Prelate of the Church of Saint Mark briefed President Clerides on the history, the work as well as the problems of the Patriarchate. He explained that the Saint George's monastery, which dates back to the 7th century, was built in the place where the Virgin Mary and the holy child found refuge and protection. Patriarch Petros also referred to his personal efforts for reconstructing the churches and monasteries of the Patriarchate.

He also thanked President Clerides for Cyprus' contribution to the Patriarchate and assured him that he himself, as a Cypriot from the Turkish- occupied part of Cyprus, would do his utmost to promote the Cyprus

problem.

For his part, President Clerides announced a donation of 25,000 Cyprus pounds by the Republic of Cyprus to the Patriarchate and an additional amount of 7,000 Cyprus pounds to cover needs of the Seminary in Kenya. He also expressed Cyprus' continued support to the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
