[01] Belgium fully supports Cyprus' accession to the EU

Belgium fully supports Cyprus' accession into the EU as well as the UN process towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem aimed at setting up a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

This was expressed by the Belgian Foreign Minister, Mr Louis Michel, at a meeting yesterday with Cyprus' Foreign Minister, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, during which the Cyprus problem and the island's European Union (EU) accession course were the main issues discussed.

The Belgian Minister said he intends to visit Cyprus towards the end of the year after his country takes over the EU rotating presidency in July.

[02] Greece says no-one can obstruct Cyprus' entry course to the EU

Greek Government Spokesman Demetris Reppas said yesterday that the EU- Cyprus Association Council gave the clear message that no-one can obstruct Cyprus' EU accession course, adding that "Greece follows the right policy and will continue to do so".

"Cyprus was congratulated on its performance in all sectors because it fulfils all preconditions", he said. "This is the best answer to Turkey, which thinks that it can raise obstacles."

[03] Russia willing to help in Cyprus problem

Russia has repeated that it is willing to contribute towards the good offices mission of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, and help towards a solution of the Cyprus problem.

A Russian Foreign Ministry statement issued after talks in Moscow on 15 May between the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Yevgeni Gussarov, and the Cyprus Foreign Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Michael Attalides, stressed the need for peace talks in Cyprus to be resumed soon and for the negotiations to be given a fresh and substantive impetus.

During the Moscow talks the two sides discussed the Cyprus problem, bilateral issues and other matters.
