[01] Cyprus signs protocol against international crime

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Ambassador Sotos Zackheos has signed the Third Protocol Against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunitions, supplementing the United Nations Conventions Against Transnational Organised Crime. Cyprus has become the 36th country to sign the above- mentioned Protocol.

In a statement, Mr Zackheos said that the signing of the Protocol proves Cyprus' dedication to world efforts to combat international organised crime.

[02] US officials commend Cyprus on measures against international terrorism

Three high-ranking officials of the US Administration sent separate letters to the Ambassador of Cyprus to the United States Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, in which they commend Cyprus on the steps taken against terrorism and money laundering.

In his letter, the Deputy Attorney General Larry D. Thompson refers to "the impressive list of anti terrorist steps taken by Cyprus through June 2002" which, he says, reaffirm Cyprus' "continuing resolve to stand with the United States and countries around the world in aggressively opposing the threat if international terrorism". He also praises Cyprus on its measures designed to prevent the flow of funds to terrorist organizations.

The Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Kenneth W. Dam praised Cyprus' "efforts to align policy with the European Union and take those necessary actions to identify and freeze assets associated with listed terrorists and their supporters".

Senator Bill Nelson commended Cyprus for its "cooperation with the war on terrorism" and expressed the appreciation that President Clerides "is negotiating in good faith with Turkish-Cypriot leader Denktash.
