[01] President Papadopoulos' statements on Turkish violations at Strovilia

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, expressed the position that Turkey was following a policy of provocations, both at the Cypriot village of Strovilia and the Aegean Sea, and said he expected the forthcoming UN Security Council resolution for the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) to strongly condemn all Turkish violations of the status quo at Strovilia. Replying to press questions yesterday regarding the latest Turkish violations at Strovilia and the Aegean Sea, the President said that the Turks were practicing a policy of provocations, which served their own motives and purposes. He further said that all the reports by the UN Secretary-General since 2000 had been referring to the violation of the status quo at Strovilia by the Turkish occupation forces, noting, "We have now ascertained not just a continuation but an expansion of the violation with new provocative actions, and we expect a very powerful decision to be included in the Security Council resolution condemning the initial violation and condemning even more strongly the new violations of this year".

[02] Foreign Minister meets UN Secretary-General in New York

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georgios Iacovou, had a meeting yesterday at the UN Headquarters with the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, with whom he discussed the latest developments in Cyprus. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mr Iacovou said that he had outlined the Greek Cypriot side's positions, namely that it was ready to return to the negotiating table and resume talks for a settlement on the basis of the Annan plan. The Cyprus Minister added that he had also referred to the failed efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem in The Hague, pointing out to Mr Annan that the responsibility lay with Mr Denktash and the Turkish government, whose negative stance continued today. "Mr Annan listened with great attention and I assess from what he said that he is very satisfied with the Greek Cypriot side's position, and Mr Papadopoulos' position. Indeed, he believes that the whole failure was due to Mr Dentkash", he added. On the partial easing of restrictions on free movement by the occupation regime, Mr Iacovou noted that the Secretary- General believed these actions did not constitute any progress towards a settlement of the Cyprus issue. Regarding the latest violations by the Turkish occupation forces at the village of Strovilia, the Secretary- General expressed the UN's position that these actions were provocative and unacceptable and he called for a restoration of the status quo ante, as Mr Iacovou pointed out. "He [the Secretary-General] expressed the position that the Permanent Members [of the UN Security Council] have prepared a resolution which, under the consequences, is quite condemning for the Turkish side as regards Strovilia…", he also noted.
