[01] Easing of restrictions on movement has no bearing on an acceptable settlement, says British MP

The partial lifting of restrictions on movement across the ceasefire line has no bearing on an acceptable political solution of the Cyprus problem, British Labour MP Mr Rudi Vis has noted during a discussion on Cyprus at the House of Commons last week. Mr Vis talked briefly about the historical background of the Cyprus conflict - making reference to the 1974 Turkish invasion, the UN Security Council resolutions on the situation in Cyprus and major decisions of the European Court of Human Rights condemning Turkey - and pointed out that although some positive changes had occurred in the last few months, a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus issue was not forthcoming. Regarding Turkey, the British parliamentarian said that it had an "abominable human rights record not only with regard to Cyprus but in many other respects". "Opening up the border between the legitimate part of Cyprus and the occupied part is an attempt to give the impression that democracy and human rights now prevail. Nothing is further from the truth. It has become crystal clear that Turkey should not be invited to start accession negotiations with the European Union until its attitude to human rights has improved considerably", he added. Concluding, Mr Vis called upon the President of the House of Commons to convey to the British Foreign Secretary that both he and many of his colleagues "would want to see real changes in Turkey, and for some considerable time, before even contemplating allowing it to commence accession negotiations".

[02] Italy's European Affairs Minister arrives to Cyprus for official visit

The Italian Minister of European Affairs, Mr Rocco Buttiglione, whose country is currently holding the rotating six-month Presidency of the European Union, arrives to Cyprus tonight for an official visit. The Italian Minister will be received tomorrow morning by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos. He will also have separate meetings with the Foreign Minister, Mr Georgios Iacovou and the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr Yiorgos Lillikas. According to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Mr Buttiglione will give a press conference tomorrow at the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce on "The Future of Europe", organised by the Italian Embassy to Cyprus and the Chamber.
