  • [01] HEADLINES

    The visiting Greek military's Chief of Staff is honoured by the President of the Republic, who himself had a reason to celebrate today;

    April 24th 1915 - April 24th 2001: 86 years of rememberance for Armenians all over the world;

    Two Russian nationals appear before Cyprus courts;

    Explosions rock both Limassol and Ayia Napa last night;

    The CSE was up today;

    and...

    We've all heard of stick, spray and roll-on deodorant, but tube?

    [02] CLERIDES PARAYIOUDAKIS

    President of the Republic Glafkos Clerides today awarded Cyprus' Grand Cross of Merit to the visiting Greek military's Chief of Staff, General Manousos Parayioudakis.

    During a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, the President of the Republic referred to the invaluable services extended by General Parayioudakis in relation to the strengthening of Cyprus' defences within the framework of the United Defence Dogma, noting that the effort first began some 25 years ago, when the now Greek Chief of Staff had served on the island as a junior officer.

    President Clerides further said that the joint crisis-handling memorandum signed by Greece and Cyprus, the advancement of joint armament programmes and the gratis concession to the Republic's security forces of weapons systems and materiel worth over 400 million pounds, constitute actions directly related to General Parayioudakis' presence at the pinnacle of the Greek Armed Forces.

    Responding, General Manousos Parayioudakis voiced his appreciation over the great honour bestowed upon him, and stressed that he will continue to work for the strengthening of Cyprus' defence, both now and in the future, whether as Chief of Staff or as a mere soldier.

    [03] CLERIDES BIRTHDAY

    Following the bestowment ceremony, the Presidential Palace was the scene of a slightly different event, with President Clerides blowing out 82 candles on a birthday cake.

    The birthday cake itself featured a model of a Dakota military aircraft, similar to the one manned by Cyprus' President during his RAF stint in World War Two.

    The cake though was not the only thing to bringing back memories to the World War Two veteran, with Greek Chief of Staff Manousos Parayioudakis presenting Glafkos Clerides with a 1940's revolver.

    On a more personal note, the President of the Republic received an embroidered portrait of himself made by the grandmother of his 12-year-old Iranian godchild, also called Glafkos.

    [04] verheugen cy

    EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Gunther Verheugen, stalwartly believes that any solution to the Cyprus Issue should safeguard the existence of an unfettered government capable of reaching decisions necessary for the functionality and efficiency of the European Union.

    In an interview to Germany's "Der Speigel" magazine, Gunther Verheugen further notes that the EU does not desire an outwardly united Cyprus, but a Cyprus which can act efficiently in international affairs.

    The EU Commissioner also mentions that as far as the European Commission is concerned, and always in co-operation with the UN-led process, the basic criterion for the various models and scenaria aiming at a Cyprus settlement is their compatibility with the acquis communautaire and the European system of values.

    [05] french fm

    French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine is expected on the island for a two-day visit on Thursday, as part of a scheduled tour of the region.

    During his stay, Mr Vedrine will be received by President of the Republic Glafkos Clerides and will also hold talks with his Cypriot counterpart, Ioannis Kasoulides.

    The focus of the French Foreign Minister's visit is expected to be the Cyprus Issue in general and the island's EU accession course.

    [06] armenian genocide

    Today marks 86 years to the day from when the Ottoman Empire's campaign which ultimately led to the genocide of over 1.5 million Armenians began.

    The mass murders, rape, humiliation and persecution which constituted the hallmarks of the 1915-1920 campaign are today described as one of the most heinous crimes against humanity and have since branded Turkey as a murderer-state.

    The Armenian Genocide is further considered to be the first systematic ethnic-cleansing campaign undertaken by Turkey, which adopted similar criminal approaches against Pontiac and other Asia Minor Greeks, Syriacs, Kurds and Greek-Cypriots.

    On the occasion of today's anniversary, the Cyprus Committee for the Memory of the Armenian Genocide has organised a series of events for today, which started off with an 11 o'clock memorial service for those massacred, at the Sourp Azdvadzadzin Church in Nicosia.

    At 8 o'clock tonight meanwhile, an official rememberance ceremony will take place at the PASYDY theatre, also in Nicosia.

    In relevant announcements, the island's political parties have all condemned the Armenian Genocide and express the Cypriot people's undying support and appreciation of the Armenian race.

    [07] russians

    Two Russian nationals found themselves in Cyprus courts today, one for fraud and one as a murder suspect.

    The Paphos District Court issued an 18-day remand order against Valery Metsanov, wanted by the Russian authorities in relation to the defraudment of millions of pounds in his country. Metsanov, suspected to be a member of the Russian Mafia, was apprehended in Paphos a few days ago, while he is expected to be deported once all necessary documents arrive from Russia.

    At the same time, the Limassol District Court was today expected to hear the plea of 37-year-old Alexander Kuzmenko, thought to be involved in the Limassol murder of Russian national Maria Slipchenko two months ago. Kuzmenko, who arrived on the island yesterday after being located by Interpol, presented himself voluntarily to the Police and has placed himself at their disposal, steadfastly denying any involvement whatsoever.

    [08] l'ssol bomb

    The Hawaii Construction Company was last night once again the apparent target of a bomb attack, the second one within the space of a week.

    The explosion, which occured at 2:20 a.m. on Kostas Pitsillides street in Limassol's Potamos Yermasoyias suburb, caused extensive damage to one of the company's luxury vehicles, parked in the garage of the Hawaii Suntan complex, the residence of 28-year company shareholder Charis Theocharous.

    The first attack, held exactly one week ago, had targetted a company car parked outside the Hawaii Gardens complex and used by Kyriakos Theocharous, last night's victim's father and a managing director of the firm.

    [09] Ayia napa blast

    Meanwhile, a blast also rocked Ayia Napa last night, when an explosion occured outside the residence of 31-year-old night-club owner Pieris Christophi.

    In his statement to the police, Christophi also mentioned that one of his hunting rifles is missing.

    The residence has three times in the past been the target of malicious attacks, twice through shooting incidents and once by a bomb attack.

    [10] cse

    A positive climate marked today's activity at the Cyprus Stock Exchange, with the All-Share Index closing at 187.36, up 0.50%.

    An increase was also posted by the overall volume of trading, which reached 11.3 million pounds.

    [11] tailer

    In today's tailer we go to London, where the Underground's authorities have literally sniffed out a good idea from across the Channel, with some of the British capital's Tube stations experiencing a waft of a special scent.

    The perfume is a variation of an air-freshener used on the Paris Metro since 1998. Called "Madeleine", after the Metro station by the same name, the slightly spicy-smelling aroma went on trial at three underground stations in central London -- Piccadilly Circus, Euston and St James's Park.

    The move was deemed necessary, given that with three million people a day using the Tube, the atmosphere can be rank at times, particularly in hot weather.

    London Underground described it as "a fresh, watery floral bouquet of rose, jasmine and citrus top notes with a touch of fruit and herbs giving way to strong woody accents and a hint of sweetness in the base".

    All in all, an olent polymerous olfactory olio!

    [12] weather

    Generally fair conditions are forecast for this afternoon, even though skies will be marked by some cloud, leading to the possibility of scattered showers.
