    [02] Hurryiet Clerides

President of the Republic Glafkos Clerides gave an interview to Turkish daily Hurryiet, presented on the front page, under the title, "He musn't go". The paper says that while thirty thousand people in the occupied territories are demanding the resignation of Turkish-cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, president Clerides stated that Denktash must not go, because otherwise a possible solution of the Cyprus issue will be brought back many years. President Clerides also said that while the leader of the ruling party in Turkey Tayip Erdogan, had admitted that Ankara has followed a wrong policy in the Cyprus issue, he has not said, what a new policy should be. According to Hurryiet, President Clerides said he does not believe that Greek cypriots will want to return en masse to the occupied territories, and vice versa, Turkish cypriots would not want to return to the South. The president of the republic said that every effort must be made to solve the Cyprus issue by the 28th of February.

    [03] Papapetrou

Meanwhile, government spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, commenting on the Hurriyet interview, said that the title was misleading and is completely unjustified, based on the contents of President Clerides' interview. The president, Papapetrou added, is referring to Denktash's manipulations in order to avoid talks and the pressure exerted on Turkish cypriots.

    [04] Denktash referendum

The Turkish cypriot leader Rauf Denktash stated that a referendum must be held inthe occupied territories, before any solution of the Cyprus problem is signed, even if an agreement is reached in all aspects of the Anan plan, before the 28th of February. Denktash said that he will explain this issue to the UN chiefs' special advisor on the Cyprus issue Alvaro De Soto, adding that both his own and Turkey's signature is needed on any solution of the Cyprus issue. Therefore, Denktash said, he is going through this procedure along with Turkey, that according to the Turkish cypriot leader sees the same difficulties and obstacles in the talks. Meanwhile, at four this afternoon, direct talks between President Clerides and Rauf Denktash continue, at Nicosia airport. The meeting is scheduled to last until six thirty. Direct talks will be held three times a week.

Maurer, following a meeting in Nicosia, with finance minister Takis Clerides, said that he considers the taxation reform, a success, because it has responded to all the criteria set by the European Union. Takis Clerides stated that the EU will be closely monitoring developments and commitments undertaken by Cyprus. The two men also discussed the issue of how much a solution of the Cyprus problem will cost, referring to a sum of billions of pounds, and the need for additional funds from the EU.

    [06] Iraq date

Russia's armed forces have obtained information that the United States and its allies have already decided to launch military action in Iraq from mid-February.

According to Russian Interfax agency's specialist military news wire AVN, quoting an unnamed high-ranking source in the Russian general staff, said U.S.-led operations would be launched once an attacking force of 150 thousand had been assembled in the Gulf.

The source added that the main aim of the war would be to secure control of Iraqi oilfields.

It was not indicated by what means the Russian military had obtained such information -- it was not clear if it had been acquired covertly by Russian intelligence services or by a direct tip-off from Washington, which would be keen to avoid any misunderstandings with Moscow if it does launch a war.

The United States says it is building up a force estimated to reach more than 150 thousand by the end of next month.

Britain is sending a further 30 thousand troops.

No other allies have come forward with significant military commitments so far and some, notably France, Germany and Russia are against rapid action.

    [07] Mexico quake

A powerful earthquake measuring 7 point 6 on the Richter scale, shook central and western Mexico last night, killing more than 40 people on the Pacific coast and sending panicked residents rushing into the streets in tears.

Emergency workers struggled to treat hundreds of people who were injured in Colima, a city of some 125 thousand people where walls and homes collapsed.

In the center of the city, firefighters tackled a small blaze at a furniture shop apparently sparked by the earthquake.

Dazed residents slept in the open air or sat in chairs in the street on a balmy night, afraid to enter buildings.

The city is the capital of a small state of the same name which is devoted mostly to agriculture.

The state is home to the active Volcano of Fire which last erupted in 1998.

The quake rocked homes and offices in Mexico City, 500 kilometers to the east, where power was briefly cut and buildings cracked.

    [08] Anastacia cancer

American pop sensation Anastacia revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer but urged her fans not to worry, declaring, "I'm a fighter."

The illness was confirmed by a biopsy the 29-year-old recording artist underwent last week in New York City, where she lives.

Anastacia also suffers from Crohn's disease, a chronic intestinal illness she was diagnosed with at age 13.

No information was disclosed about plans for cancer treatment, though her spokesman, said the singer had not undergone surgery.
