    [01] Acarkan on Kaklamanis' visit

According to illegal Bayrak radio (20.2.96), the so-called Assembly Speaker Ayhan Halit Acarkan has alleged that with his speeches in Cyprus, Apostolos Kaklamanis, president of the Greek Parliament showed once again that Greece is the party most responsible for the failure to reach an agreement in Cyprus.

In a written statement on the issue, Acarkan said he hopes all the international circles who are trying to bring the two sides together will assess Kaklamanis' visit to Cyprus well and, in light of this assessment, will approach the Turkish Cypriot side's "justifiable suspicions and sensibilities with greater understanding."

He stressed that there are no alternatives to solve the Cyprus problem other than through peaceful means. It would be crazy to think of other means, he said.

    [02] Demirel assures Turkish Cypriots

In his Bayram message (KIBRIS - 20.2.96) Demirel referred to the Cyprus problem and said that a settlement will be realized through negotiations. He added: "It is not possible to reach anywhere by fait accompli. From the economic point of view, the TRNC will be quickly integrated with Turkey. Turkey shall continue to be the guarantor of our brethren in Cyprus". (MY)
