    NEWS ITEMS

[01] Identity cards and birth certificates thrown away

KIBRIS (11.9.96) reports that old identity cards, belonging to British colonial time, the Republic of Cyprus, the so-called Autonomous Turkish Cypriot administration, and the "TRNC" were thrown away in an open field behind the old building of the Registry Office.

Among the documents, says KIBRIS, are Registry Books of 50-60-year old birth certificates, hundreds of identity cards, marriage certificates and diplomas.

It reports that the above mentioned documents give the picture of the period between 1900 and 1960. (MY)

[02] Ciller wants to resume peace process

KIBRIS (11.9.96) reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller who arrived in the occupied area to attend the funeral of the murdered soldier, in Akheritou, called on the Greek Cypriot side to resume the peace process.

Speaking at the occupied Tymbou airport upon her arrival Ciller said: "Once more I call upon the world. These events increase tension and not the peace possibilities".

When a journalist pointed out that she was coming to Cyprus for a second time within a month because of bitter events and asked whether this could be interpreted as heading for a war, Ciller said: "We as Turkey together with our brethren are determined to make peace. We have said this time and again. We have this courage. Making war needs courage, but establishing peace needs more courage and more determination. We have this courage and determination."

When asked whether she had a message to convey to the Greek Cypriots, Ciller said: "Escalating this tension is not conducive to establishing peace. Once again, I call upon the UN and say `let us start the dialogue and the peace process as soon as possible by bringing together the leaders of both sides'. However, this does not cast a shadow on our determination regarding this incident. This is a crime. The perpetrators of this crime should be found. It is not possible to close this case until the perpetrators are found." (MY)

[03] Denktash calls for resumption of negotiations

According to KIBRIS (11.9.96), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, speaking at the funeral, expressed his sorrow about the death of the soldier. In his eulogy, Denktash referred to the Cyprus problem and said that it was a problem not only of Turkish Cypriots but of Turkey as well. "Turkish Cypriots" he said, will not be under the Greek Cypriot administration and domination nor will Turkey leave Cyprus to Greece."

Denktash added: "Let us sit around the negotiating table. Let us discuss at the negotiating table how we could live side by side without killing or hurting each other. Let us discuss how we could live helping each other, or how we could turn Cyprus into a peace bridge between Greece and Turkey." (MY)

[04] Grey wolves on the attack

KIBRIS (11.9.96) publishes the picture of a group of fascists who are members of the terrorist "grey wolves" organization who took active part in the killing of Tassos Isaac in Dherynia.

The group holding flags of the organization - the Crescent and the Grey Wolf-arrived at the Ledra Palace check-point following the funeral of the soldier killed in Akheritou, and started shouting slogans against the UN and the Cyprus government.

KIBRIS further reports that some of the protestors argued with the Turkish occupation troops manning the post. They started throwing stones, crossed the barbed wires, entered into the buffer zone and tried to enter into the free areas.

KIBRIS adds that stones thrown by the grey wolves broke some windows of the UN post and the Ledra Palace. (MY)

    [05] RTP headquarters attacked

YENIDUZEN (10.9.96) reports that unidentified persons threw a molotov cocktail at the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Headquarters and Nicosia branch causing minimum damage.

RTP officials strongly condemned the attack and they called upon the "security forces" to find the perpetrators. (MY)
