The delegation was briefed by the so-called University President as well as faculty members on the LEU and on the Cyprus problem.

The delegation includes academicians from eleven well-known German universities and is looking into ways of developing relations between German Universities and so-called universities in the occupied area, as well as demonstrating that they are supporting the occupied area. [04] Denktash `happy' with Annan approach to Cyprus issue

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (5:00 hours, 10.4.97) the meeting between Rauf Denktash and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan took place in Geneva yesterday. In a telephone statement to illegal BRT (Bayrak Radio and Television) after the meeting, Denktash said that Annan proposed a meeting between him and President Clerides in June or July. Describing his meeting with Annan as beneficial, Denktash added that he was well received by the press in Geneva.

Recounting that a radio station aimed at foreign diplomats in Geneva interviewed him yesterday, Denktash said: "In this way, I had the opportunity to explain the Turkish Cypriot side's views".

Meanwhile, in his statement after the approximately hour-long meeting with Annan at UN headquarters, Denktash said:

"I am happy with the UN Secretary General's approach to the issue. He sees the meetings as being held within the framework of the Ghali Set of Ideas."

Denktash added that the date and place of the face-to-face meetings have not been set yet. He said that such a meeting, if it takes place, can be held in Geneva, New York, or any other suitable place.

Thanking Denktash for coming to Geneva for the meeting, Annan said that he had recently assumed his post and that he will exert efforts to resolve the issue in line with the UN goodwill mission.

    [05] Demirel on Cyprus

According to HALKIN SESI (10.3.97) Turkish President Suleyman Demirel speaking during a conference at the War Academy in Istanbul referred to the Cyprus problem and claimed that it was the Turkish Armed Forces that secured peace in Cyprus in 1974 and that the Turkish Armed Forces had taken over the duties of the UN and were acting as a Peace Force on the island.

Referring to the S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems that the Cyprus government has decided to deploy in order to strengthen its air defence systems in case of a Turkish air attack, Demirel alleged that the issue concerns the Eastern Mediterranean countries, and added that the deployment of the S-300 in Cyprus is in fact tantamount to bringing Russia to the Mediterranean. He said the deployment of the S-300 missiles should not be Turkey's problem only.
