  • [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] Gurel in the occupied area

According to KIBRIS (28.1.98) Turkey's State Minister Responsible for Cyprus Affairs and Government Spokesman Sukru Gurel yesterday arrived in the occupied area.

Speaking to reporters at the occupied Tymbou airport Gurel claimed: "The Greek-Greek Cypriot duo continue arming in a manner increasing the possibility of a conflict on the island, but, we will not stay silent".

He further claimed: "At present, there is an attempt to threaten the TRNC as well as Turkey using the Cyprus problem".

KIBRIS reports that while Gurel was making these statements in the occupied area, Turkey's Ground Forces Commander General Huseyin Kivrikoglu, speaking to Anatolia Agency correspondent in Bolu, western Turkey, said "the Turkish Armed Forces have taken all the measures for the Paphos base".

Turkey's State Minister Responsible for Cyprus Affairs Sukru Gurel also said that the Turkish government has authorized the Chief of Staff to take additional military measures and that turning the occupied Lefkonikco airport into a permanent air base is one of the options among these measures.

He stressed that Turkey will do everything possible to ensure the occupied area's survival as an "independent and sovereign state".

Furthermore, according to illegal Bayrak radio (16:30 hours, 27.1.98), Gurel has also stated that "Turkey favours the existence of the two peoples on the island side by side and under equal conditions while upholding the states they have established". Gurel claimed that Greece and the Cyprus Government want to escalate armament in a manner that increases the possibility of a clash on the island. Pointing out that Turkey, together with the "TRNC", will take the necessary measures against the Greek Cypriot armament efforts, Gurel said: "The Turkish Government has indicated at every opportunity that the eternal existence of the TRNC is of vital importance to Turkey. We have begun to do whatever we can on this issue. We will do much more in the future." Noting that his visit will constitute a good opportunity to expand the fields of cooperation, Gurel said that the steps to be taken in the future will be planned in the contacts he will hold during this visit.

Gurel began his contacts and called on Rauf Denktash, "acting assembly speaker" Olgun Pasalar, and Eroglu. In a statement during his meeting with Gurel, Denktash said that the Turkish Govenrment's determination and statements on the Cyprus issue are being followed with interest. Denktash added that President Clerides has convinced the Greek Cypriots that armament is security and added: "I hope they will understand this. The path they have pursued so far has taken Cyprus nowhere."

[02] Turkish Cypriot participation in export products fair in Israel

KIBRIS (28.1.98) reports that the so-called Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce will be taking part in the Third Turkish Export Products Fair to be opened in Tel-Aviv, Israel, between 9-12 February 1998.

The occupied area will have its own stand where the occupied area's trade industry, education, tourism, agriculture banking-finance service sectors will be promoted.

Hasan Sungurlu and Hasip Erel will represent the so-called Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce at the fair.

[03] Turkish envoy drawing UNSC's attention to base in Cyprus

According to TRT (5:30 hours, 28.1.98) Turkey is drawing the attention of the UN Security Council to the air base built by the Cyprus Government. Huseyin Celem, Turkey's permanent ambassador to the United Nations, is expected to hold a series of contacts where he will draw attention to the "conflict" this base will provoke. Celem will also meet with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and voice Turkey's "complaint", as he put it.
