[01] Cetin defends Turkish Cypriot equality in Palermo meeting

According to Anatolia Agency (7:20 hours, 2.6.98) Hikmet Cetin, the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, said on Monday that it can be proved in the Mediterranean that the ethnic groups of different languages and religions could live together.

Addressing the Conference of the Parliament Speakers of the European Parliament and of the Mediterranean Countries in Palermo, Cetin inter alia tried to respond the accusations against Turkey of Mr. Spyros Kyprianou, the Chairman of the House of Representatives, that ``Cyprus is faced with the risk of ethnic cleansing, there won´t be any Turkish people on the island within 5 or 10 years and the problem can be solved only with the Greek Cypriot´s entrance to the European Union'', by claiming that Turkey defends peace and dialogue and wants a solution accepting the equality of both sides on the island. He alleged that the pseudostate should be listened to along with the Greek Cypriot side at the conferences, such as the one in Palermo.

[02] Turkey to caution US on delivery of S-300s to Cyprus

According to a report in TURKIYE (2.6.98), Russia will not retreat from its decision to sell S-300 missiles to Cyprus. Turkey will inform the United States when Secretary of State Madeleine Albright visits Ankara in mid June that the missiles may cause a heated clash. They are expected to be delivered to Cyprus in August.

It has been reported that Turkey will increase the number of its troops and arms in the occupied area if the missiles are installed. It also has been reported that the Turkish ``embassy'' personnel in the occupied part of Nicosia have been informed that leave in August has been canceled because of a possible crisis.

The talks Thomas Miller held with the sides in Cyprus failed to yield a result last week. Meanwhile, General Ismail Hakki Karadayi, Chief of the Turkish General Staff, clearly briefed the officials in Moscow on Turkey´s approach to the missiles problem some time ago. Attention has now been focused on Secretary of State Madeleine Albright´s visit to Ankara in mid June. The date of her visit has not yet been established. Ankara will convey its views on the missiles to the United States when she arrives.

Turkey will inform Washington that it will increase its military units and arms on the island if the missiles are delivered and warn that the deployment of the missiles may cause a heated clash. According to the report, the radar base Russia will establish for its missiles will be the first step in Moscow´s plan to monitor the east Mediterranean and the Middle East. Russia is expected to dispatch its special representative to the island after the base becomes operational, the report adds.

A high-ranking diplomatic official has said that whether or not Richard Holbrooke will visit the island again is unknown. He stressed that Turkey making concessions on the problem is out of the question.

[03] Denktash says dialogue with Greek Cypriots `destroyed´

According to illegal Bayrak radio (5:00 hours, 2.6.98) Rauf Denktash has said that the Turkish Cypriot side will not be the side to feel disappointed if the Greek Cypriots reject the opportunity to conduct talks between ``states''.

In a statement to illegal TAK, Denktash claimed that the EU application submitted by the Cyprus Government on behalf of the whole of Cyprus has totally destroyed the dialogue. He further claimed that President Clerides will not (honour) the 1977 and 1979 agreements, and added: ``These agreements envisage a nonaligned Cyprus. The application for EU membership has also eliminated this basic principle.''

Denktash continued: ``We are engaged in self-defense in the face of the new decisions made and the unhealthy steps taken by the Greek Cypriot leadership. Our goal and our policy consist of defending our sovereignty and political equality rights, which are inherent in the sovereignty of Cyprus'', he claimed.

[04] Delegation from Turkey´s National Security Academy to visit pseudostate

According to KIBRIS (3.6.98) a sixty eight-man delegation from Turkey´s National Security Academy headed by its commander, Major-General Kemal Yilmaz, is to arrive in the occupied area tomorrow.

The group will conduct a series of contacts in the occupied area. (MY)

[05] YENIDUZEN on the granting of ``citizenship''

YENIDUZEN (3.6.98) reports under the banner headlines ``Scandal'' about the fact that the occupation regime is granting ``citizenship'' even to those mainland Turks who did not secure a ``Certificate of good character''. YENIDUZEN says that people who beat ``police'' were made ``TRNC citizens''.

``Granting people `citizenship´ has speeded up because of the forthcoming local elections'' says YENIDUZEN and adds that among the people who were granted ``citizenship'' are: Turkish Agriculture Minister, Mustafa Taser, football manager Yilmaz Mural, and folk singer Yildiray Cinar.

[06] Brucella in the occupied area

According to KIBRIS (3.6.98) work has started in the occupied area to eradicate brucella.

It reports that after 10 years, brucella is again found in livestock.

KIBRIS adds that 9300 tests were conducted and 1.1% of the tested animals were found infected with brucella.

[07] Illegal Bayrak to broadcast from Turksat-1 satellite

Note: In item 5 of yesterday´s Bulletin No. 95/98 (dated 2.6.98), it was mistakenly reported that occupied Trachoni along with occupied Morphou area are to become so-called districts of the pseudostate. The correct is that occupied Trikomo, and occupied Morphou area, are to become so-called districts.
