[01] Denktash threatens against adoption of UNSC draft resolutions

According to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 29.6.98), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has threatened that if the UN Security Council (UNSC) draft resolutions on the extension of the UNFICYP (UN Forces in Cyprus) mandate and the goodwill mission of the UN Secretary General are adopted without any changes then there will not be much to discuss with Cordovez, the UN Secretary General´s special representative in Cyprus.

Denktash pointed out that the draft resolutions refer to a single sovereignty and a single citizenship and accuse the Turkish Cypriot side of not continuing the negotiations.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriots themselves will decide on their own future, Denktash alleged that the problem cannot be resolved ``by those who live far away without acknowledging the realities of the island or through pro Greek Cypriot stands.''

Noting that he will explain all these to Cordovez, Denktash added that ``he will point out the efforts being exerted by the Greeks to Hellenize the island.'' He further alleged: ``There is not a single administration nor single government representing Cyprus. This has not been the case for the last 35 years. The time has come to renounce this deceit.''

Denktash said that he informed the UN Secretary General of the situation in Cyprus and the stand of the Turkish Cypriot side, adding that subsequently the UN Secretary General asked the UNSC to change his authorities. Denktash claimed that, however, the UNSC acted in line with its own interests, ignoring those of the two communities living in Cyprus.

[02] Denktash ``warns'' envoys against adoption of UN resolutions

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 29.6.98), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash yesterday summoned the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council prior to the adoption of the UN resolutions on the Cyprus question and once again stressed the stand of the pseudostate. Denktash told the envoys that ``if the draft resolutions on the extension of the UNFICYP (UN Forces in Cyprus) mandate and the UN Secretary General´s goodwill mission regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem are adopted in their current form then the TRNC will have nothing much to discuss on the Cyprus issue''. Denktash told the envoys that in the draft resolutions, phrases such as the Cyprus Government, single sovereignty, and single citizenship were used and claimed that the Turkish Cypriot side was unjustly accused.

[03] Denktash: Measures taken to use Lefkoniko as military base

According to Anatolia Agency (10:20 hours, 29.6.98) Rauf Denktash has declared that all the measures have been adopted to use the occupied Lefkoniko airport as a military base if necessary.

In reply to a question, Dentkash said: ``We will maintain the Lefkoniko airport in working condition on a permanent basis. It used to be in working condition when the need arose. Now because of the base accorded to the Greeks in the south, Lefkoniko will permanently be used as a military base, an airport, that can be utilized instantly.''

    [04] Eroglu assesses ``election'' results

According to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 29.6.98 Dervis Eroglu, National Unity Party (UBP) leader and so-called prime minister, in a statement he issued the results of the local ``elections'', has said that the voters have expressed support for those whom they believe will render the best service.

Eroglu continued: ``We assess our emergence from this election as the number one party as a manifestation of our people´s belief and determination regarding the TRNC''. He stressed that his party has never conceded its goal of keeping alive and developing the pseudostate together with Turkey. Eroglu said: ``The fact that our people have endorsed our sacred goal conveys a significant message not only to us but to the entire world.''

[05] Denktash comments on ``municipal election'' results

A report in AVRUPA (30.6.98) with the title ``Denktash Assessed Election Results: He says Money Played a Great Role!'', says that Rauf Denktash has stated that he remained above-party during the ``elections''. Denktash said: ``I pity those who are naïve enough to think that the DP´s (Democratic Party) showing is Rauf Denktash´s defeat.''

In congratulating the UBP (National Unity Party) for its huge success at the ``elections'', Denktash offered advise to the other parties and made the following comment without mentioning party names: ``One of them is the oldest party with deep roots. It also has money. That played a great role in its victory. The others are still young. Some do not yet have a proper party organization. They also appear to be at loggerheads with each other. They will feel the need to work in a more organized manner. And some others must have seen now where they will end up by repudiating the national cause. They have reneged on the national cause. They have to factor that in. This people knows what the Greek President is saying and is perfectly aware of the struggle it has been waging against such statements.''
