[01] Ecevit, Denktash lay cornerstone of new quay in occupied Kyrenia

According to Anatolia Agency (9:12 hours, 23.11.98) the foundation of a new quay at the tourism harbour in occupied Kyrenia was laid on Sunday with a ceremony which Rauf Denktash and Bulent Ecevit, the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of State, attended.

Addressing the ceremony, Denktash said, ``we didn´t make our martyrs feel ashamed. As a result of Turkey´s determination, our people understand that our state is permanent''.

``Saying that I have a state means integration and integration means cooperation; further strengthening of the TRNC, more effective assistance by Turkey and the integration of our economies,'' Denktash added.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit repeated his claim that peace was brought to the island by the Turkish Cypriots, alleging that the confederation proposal was an important step for peace.

Further claiming that the countries which didn´t officially recognize the ``TRNC'' started to feel an obligation to accept that there is a ``state'' in the north of Cyprus, Ecevit said that there were important developments in the world concerning the ``TRNC'' and those were the signals for the acceptance of the ``TRNC´s'' existence.

[02] Paper says Tymbou incident was a ``smugglers dispute''

AVRUPA (21.11.98) reports on the shooting incident that had reportedly taken place at one of the sentry posts in the occupied Tymbou airport (see Turkish Press Bulletin No. 213, 18.11.98) and the occupation regime´s accusations that the attack was carried by the Greek Cypriots and says that in fact it was an incident between Turkish and Greek Cypriot smugglers. The paper adds that according to information, the incident did not involve any attack, but the ``settling of accounts'' between smugglers from both sides.

AVRUPA claims that smugglers from both sides are engaged in huge business and lorries full of Anglias or V.S.O.P 31 brandy and electrical equipment and tools cross the ``borders''.

AVRUPA wonders why there was silence on the part of Denktash´s regime after the incident was first reported. (MY)

[03] Italian beauty will not come to the occupied area

According to KIBRIS (24.11.98) the Italian beauty who had previously announced that she would be taking part in the ``European Peace Beauty Contest'' to be held in the occupied area on 28 November, informed the organizers that she would not be taking part in the contest due to security reasons.

The so-called general coordinator Bulent Gunkut said that because of the protests following Italy´s decision not to extradite Kurdish leader Ocalan to Turkey, the Italian beauty has informed the organizing agency in Istanbul that she will not be taking part in the contest because of security reasons.

She said she was to come to the occupied area via Istanbul and for this reason she has canceled her program.

KIBRIS reports that beauties from 15 countries will take part in the contest.

Contestants from Poland, Denmark, Turkey, Ukrain, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Moldavia have already arrived in the occupied area. (MY)

[04] Turkish Cypriots protest UNFICYP for not receiving petition

Illegal Bayrak radio (13:30 hours, 23.11.98) says that thousands of people who took part in the protest march organized in the occupied area by the ``Struggle Platform for National Objective (UHIMP)'' and the ``Determination Platform (UKP)'' marched towards the Ledra Palace barricade..

At the check point the protesters wanted to convey a petition to Italy´s Embassy in Nicosia, through the UN Peace-keeping Force in Cyprus. However, there was no UN official present at the check point to receive the petition. The stance adopted by the UN was protested by the people who took part in the march. Rauf Denktash, so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu and some ``ministers'' supported the protesters by actively taking part in the protest march.

Following UN Peace-keeping Force´s refusal to accept the petition, the ``Coordination Action Committee'' decided to hold an extraordinary meeting at the ``Fighters Association''.

Speaking at the meeting the chairman of the UHIMP, Halil Pasha, said that in the name of 25 organizations and the ``Coordination Action Committee'' they strongly protest ``this meaningless and biased stance of the UN Peace- keeping Force''.

Stating that the so-called foreign ministry ``officials'' informed the UN Peace keeping Force officials about the protest march, Halil Pasha said that ``it is incomprehensible why there was no UN soldier at the check point.''

He said that he would fix an appointment with Rauf Denktash to discuss the issue, and that he would request from Denktash to intervene.

Pasha stated that a way will be found to deliver the petition to the Italian officials.

He also said that with this meeting it is demonstrated that the Turkish Nation is a single body in the ``TRNC'' as well.

In the petition the alleged relation between the PKK and the Cyprus Government is strongly criticized.

In the meantime,KIBRIS (24.11.98) reports that the members of the organizing committee had a meeting with Denktash. During the meeting the committee members submitted the petition to Denktash for him to convey it to Dame Ann Hercus.

Denktash promised to write a letter to Dame Hercus and convey the petition to her.

In addition, speaking to committee members of the Farmers Union Denktash said that the Turkish Cypriots were an indivisible part of the Turkish Nation ``and for this reason we, too, denounce Italy, and demonstrate our reaction. Our wish is the two NATO allies to understand each other as soon as possible otherwise Italy which for years was forced to struggle against Mafia and terrorism will again become a centre for wickedness. The PKK will be a problem to them'' said Denktash and urged Italy to give up ``her wrong decisions''.

The chairman of the Democratic Party Serdar Denktash has demanded from the Italian government to extradite Abdullah Ocalan to Turkey. The Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce (TCCC) also denounced Italy. The chairman of the TCCC Eren Ertan expressed support for the protests ``We strongly criticize the decision taken by the Italian Court not to extradite Ocalan, '' he said.

On the other hand, ``Our Party'' in a statement called on the Turkish politicians, who for the sake of EU membership turned their back to the Islamic world, to take a lesson from Italy´s stance. It called on the Turkish Cypriots to return to their roots as well. The statement also called on the Turkish Cypriots to be a member of the Islamic Union. (MY)

    [05] Ancient church is now a sheep-pen

ORTAM (24.11.98) reports that the ancient church in the occupied village of Elia has been turned into a sheep-pen by Denktash`s regime.

ORTAM criticizes the occupation regime for not paying the necessary attention to historic and religious buildings. It accuses the occupation regime of turning a blind eye to the fact that the church has been turned into a sheep-pen.

ORTAM also says that the old Venetian water reservoir is also in a dilapidated state. (MY)

[06] Turkish Airlines increase flights to occupied area

According to KIRBIS (24.11.98) the Turkish Airlines (THY) has increased their weekly flights to the occupied area from five to seven.

The local director of the Turkish Airlines, Dogan Mengutemur, said that if in future the number of passengers increases then they will increase the number of flights as well.

KIBRIS says that the THY has brought 34,305 passengers to the occupied area in the first nine months of this year. In the same period last year the figure was 16,425 passengers. (MY)

[07] Azeri newspaper claims Azerbaidjan to recognize pseudostate

KIBRIS (24.11.98) reports that the mouthpiece of the Azeri government ``New Azerbaidjan'' (Yeni Azerbaycan), in its 19th November issue wrote about the pseudostate. The article, which propagates Denktash´s and Turkey´s views on the Cyprus problem, concludes by saying that ``despite some legal difficulties, Azerbaidjan will sooner or later recognize the TRNC and there will be at least five embassies in Nicosia''. (MY)

[08] Turkish Labour Minister in the occupied area

According to KIBRIS (24.11.98) Turkey´s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Nami Cagan, has arrived in the occupied area as the guest of so- called minister Onur Borman.

Speaking at the occupied Tymbou airport Cagan said that Turkey is ready to extend every help to the occupied area. (MY)
