[01] ETKIN CALLS ON PRESIDENT CLERIDES TO ABANDON ``DREAM WORLD''

According to Anatolia Agency (00921 hours, 3/12/98) Taner Etkin, so- called minister of foreign affairs and defense, has said: ``Our government and our party will reject every approach that does not accept the existence of the TRNC''.

In a written statement, Etkin said: ``We want that realities to be accepted. We want recognition of the fact that the Greek Cypriot administration has no right to rule the Turkish Cypriot people and that it cannot act as though it were the government of the entire island. We insist on that issue''. Etkin claimed that the way to bring about a rooted solution to the missile problem was through President Clerides ``waking up from his dream world and accepting the realities''.

Etkin said that an agreement to be concluded should be based on the principle of ``two states'' stressing that the 1960 Guarantee System should continue as is.

Alleging that international recognition of the ``TRNC'' is necessary from the viewpoint of international law, Etkin concluded claiming:

``The international support being extended to the Greek Cypriot side, which has usurped the partnership republic based on two separate democracies and two equal and sovereign peoples, will not be conducive to a peaceful solution on the island. The duty that befalls us under these conditions is to develop and enhance, through the powerful support of Turkey, the TRNC which was established as a result of the great sacrifices and lofty struggle of our people''.
