[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] TURKEY'S UN ENVOY ON 'UNFRIENDLY' GREEK ATTITUDEAccording to Anatolia Agency (1002 hours, 3.3.99), Volkan Vural, Turkey's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), criticized on Wednesday Greece harshly in New York for the alleged support it offered to the PKK (Workers Party of Kurdistan).Ambassador Vural, who attended the meeting of the UN Correspondents Association in New York, claimed: "Greece is misbehaving and Greece's attitude towards Turkey is not friendly". "The PKK wouldn't have been able to come to this point without outside support", he added and he listed Syria, some powers in the occupied area of Cyprus and Greece among the supporters of PKK. "Greece's behavior is targeted at creating instability in Turkey, therefore it is an hostile act", he alleged. Responding to the questions of foreign journalists the Ambassador said Ocalan will have a fair trial which will be open to public except for confidential hearings required by the prosecutors. Vural, upon an another question, stated that Turkey did not execute death penalty since 1984. [02] DENKTASH CALLS ON "ASSEMBLY" TO REASSESS CYPRUS PROBLEMAccording to illegal BRTK (1730 hrs (3.3.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is adamant in his demand that the pseudo-assembly and the "government" reassess the Cyprus problem after the alleged revelation of Greek Cypriot-Greek links with the PKK.Claiming that the Greek Cypriots do not want peace but the whole of Cyprus, Denktash said "we, in our turn, are not willing to cede Cyprus to them." He also spoke on the need for a new assessment at this stage. Denktash said that Thomas Miller's visit to the island was announced three weeks ago but he does not think that the visit is related to the latest developments. Denktash noted: "Miller was already going to come, and when he comes he will be briefed about the latest Turkish-Greek relations and the existing tension." He added: "We will convey our profound complaints to him and dwell on the difficulties of coming together with people who maintain such a mentality, policy and outlook. It is said that Mr. Miller has been appointed to another post as an ambassador. If that is correct, then it means he would also be paying a farewell visit and throw a final glance on the developments. But since I am not certain if such an appointment has indeed been made, I cannot say anything more. As you know, the German Special Envoy on Cyprus Graf zu Rantzau was our guest a month ago. We are meeting him as the special representative of Germany. We are not discussing the EU issue with him. Mr. Rantzau knows the reasons for that very well. He is a diplomat with good knowledge of the Cyprus issue. I think that he would help his government to assess the Cyprus problem in light of what he has seen and ascertained". After repeating his claim about a "two states reality", Denktash concluded: "I repeat what I said 25 years ago. Thanks God, what I said back then came to pass last year, namely that we cannot conclude any agreement of federation with the Greek Cypriots before we establish our own state. This is what I said 25 years ago. Eventually, last year, together with our Motherland, we said that the talks could only be held on the basis of two states. But after what the Greek Cypriots did in the Ocalan case, our government, as well as the Turkish Government and our parliament would, naturally, need to take a pose to make a new assessment. I too feel the same need. The Greek Cypriots do not want peace with us; they want Cyprus. And we are not going to give Cyprus to them." [03] DENKTASH CRITICIZES TALAT FOR HAVING SAID "I AM A CYPRIOT"According to illegal Bayrak Radio (1630 hours, 3.3.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has reacted strongly to remarks made by Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party. Denktash criticized the following remarks made by Talat: I am a Cypriot. My motherland is not Turkey. Stating that it is not enough to say that one is a Cypriot, Denktash said one has to say that he is a Turkish Cypriot, reiterating that there is no Cypriot nation. Claiming that the Greek Cypriots are using the term Cypriot to define a Cypriot nation in which the Turkish Cypriots are portrayed as a minority, Denktash criticized Talat for continuing to deceive the people despite all his explanations.Reiterating that Talat says that he is a Cypriot and that his motherland is not Turkey, Denktash added": I invite him to get on the right track". Stressing that the term Cypriot denotes a geographical location and that Turk defines a nation, Denktash said: "Talat agrees with Makarios' remarks if he means that he is part of the Cypriot nation when he claims to be a Cypriot. I regret this." Denktash continued: "It is not enough to say that one is a Cypriot; one must say that one is a Turkish Cypriot. One has to be proud of being a citizen of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). One has to be proud of being an integral part of the Turkish nation. I repeat: There is no Cypriot nation. The Greek Cypriots have been trying to deceive the world into believing that they are the Cypriot nation and that the Turkish Cypriots are a minority. I warn my people against this. Mr. Talat cannot deceive anybody by claims that Denktash said this or that to the Cypriot people. I invite him to get on the right track. I ask him: Do you mean to say that you are part of the Cypriot nation when you claim to be a Cypriot? Is there a Cypriot nation? Do you accept this? If not, do you accept the fact that the TRNC people are part of the Turkish nation? If you accept all this, why are you upholding the concept of a Cypriot nation? The term Cypriot denotes a geographical location. Being a Turk means a nationality. Nobody can or should attempt to change this through demagogy. That would be a mistake. I feel the need to say this once again because this is not a joking matter." [04] GERMAN FAMILY WANTED BY INTERPOL MAY BE IN THE OCCUPIED AREAKIBRIS (4.3.99) reports under the title "Is the German family in the TRNC?" and says that the German family from Augsburg, Germany, who are the followers of the Islam's Nakshibendi order of the sunii sect, might be in the occupied area. KIBRIS says that because of their religious belief, the family refused to let their six month old baby, Mukarim Emil, to be treated for cancer, and took their baby and left Germany for an unknown destination. The attorney general of Augsburg, Rheinhard Nemetz, has said that the baby's parents, Sven (26) and Lamia (22), took their child on 17 February and left for the "TRNC" from Stuttgart. He said that they located the couple's car at the Stuttgart's airport parking place. Nemetz said the couple are followers of the Nakshibendi order based in the occupied area and that they have issued a remand order for the couple through Interpol.Mr. Nemetz appealed to the baby's family to take the child for treatment otherwise the baby might die. Meanwhile, so-called TRNC police spokeswoman Pervin Gurlen said that Interpol's arrest warrant will be "officially" conveyed to the "TRNC police" today. She said that as soon as they receive the official note, "police" will conduct investigation. So-called Press and Public Relations "police" officer, Huriye Uluel, has said that they were unable to locate the persons carrying the names Lamia Maerzke and Sven Maerzke, but she said that the couple might have used other names to enter the occupied area. The head of the Nakshibendi order in Cyprus is Seyh Muhammed Nazil al Hakkani Kibrisi. (MY) [05] TURKISH CYPRIOT PARTICIPATION IN TOURISM FAIRSAccording to KIBRIS (4.3.99) the so-called Union of Turkish Cypriot Travelling Agents (KITSAB) will take part in the Berlin and Moscow Tourism Fairs, to be held between 6-10 March in Berlin and 24-27 March in Moscow, respectively.The Chairman of "KITSAB" , Remiye Canaltay, has said that "taking part in such fairs is very important in promoting the country's tourism and finding new tourism markets". Canaltay said: "Since the year 2000 has been declared a year of pilgrimage, we 've also started work and have prepared brochures that tell the legend of the Apostolos Andreas Monastery. We will distribute these brochures at the Berlin ITB' 99 Tourism Fair." Canaltay further added that they will also take part in the Moscow MITT' 99 Tourism Fair.
