[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Ecevit on S-300´s in CreteAnatolia Agency (12:40 hours, 3.8.99) reports that Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit, responding to a journalist´s question, stated that he heard the news saying that the S-300 missiles which were earlier deployed on Crete are ready to be used and that he has no further information about this issue.When asked how this situation will affect the relations with Greece, Ecevit said, ``I hope it will not negatively affect the relations. Of course, it is a good thing that these missiles were not deployed on Cyprus. In fact, I think that two friendly and NATO ally countries should not need the necessity of taking such precautions. The most important thing is to live in peace as two ally countries and to solve the problems with dialogue''. [02] Mobile phone company begins operations in occupied areaHALKIN SESI (3.8.99) reports that ``North Cyprus´ TRNCELL'' (a subsidiary of the Turkish mobile phone service provider TURKCELL) formally commenced its services last Monday.Since the start of its operations three months ago ``TRNCELL'' has registered 100,000 subscribers. ``TRKCELL'', with its one central exchange and 70 cells, has spent almost $20 million for its investment in the occupied area. TURNCELL, which began operations in Turkey in 1994, is a partnership of Sonera Corporation, Cukurova Holding, Murat Vargi Telecommunicaitons, and Bilka Company. The ``TRNCELL'' subscribers would also benefit from the various services- such as telesecretary, SMS (Short Message Service), voice mail with callback, call forwarding, CLIP, 8080 finance line, short news service, ready card, fax/data, call hold, call waiting, and call shortening-provided by TURKCELL, a gigantic establishment with more than 4 million subscribers in Turkey, 74 central exchanges, more than 15,000 relay stations, and more than 400 cells. [03] Turkish American lobby sends letter to ClintonAccording to MILLIYET (4.8.99) the American Turkish lobby has sent a letter to USA President Bill Clinton, underlying the fact that confederation is the only beneficial road which foresees the recognition of two separate administrations on the island.It also criticizes ``the retrograde policy of the Cyprus Government which widens the insecurity between the two peoples on the island''. In the letter, the Greek-Cypriots are being accused for buying high technology weapons and of supporting the PKK. It is also claimed that the Cyprus problem can only be solved when the Greek Cypriots accept ``the reality''. (DP) [04] Mayor of German city invited to the occupied areaKIBRIS (4.8.99) reports that the soccer team of the occupied village of Geunyeli, which participates in the Julilaumsturnier tournament , taking place in Aalen, Germany, won yesterday the German soccer team VFR Aalen with 2-0 and gained a position in the final group.In the meantime, the Geunyeli soccer team has visited the Mayor of the city of Aalen, Ulrich Pfeifle, and invited him to visit the ``TRNC''. (DP) [05] Full day schooling in the occupied areaAccording to KIBRIS (4.8.99), as of next September full-day schooling will start in the eleven primary schools of the pseudostate as envisaged in a plan called ``The Plan of Education Strategies in the TRNC in the wake of the 21st Century.''The aim of the Plan is to further education in schools whose infrastructure will be developed and that will be furnished with modern equipment. Furthermore, the aim is at every level of education to teach students the proper use of the Turkish language, and also to realise the teaching of foreign languages. Also to encourage the use of computers and other educational technologies in schools, to encourage extracalicular activities thus developing students´ knowledge and skill, to organize family education programmes, and to give the chance to people from all walks of life to continuously take part in the work related to education. (MY) [06] General strikeAll the papers (4.8.99) report that the ``Democracy Platform'', formed by 17 Turkish Cypriot trade unions to react against the price increases announced by the so-called coalition government, will organize a general strike today.The aim of the strike is to force the so-called government to cancel the price hikes. The papers report that life in the occupied area will be paralyzed today as ``civil servants'' trade unions KTAMS and KAMU-SEN will also take part in the strike. (MY) [07] Japanese students in the occupied areaAVRUPA and KIBRIS (3.8.99) report that in the framework of a cooperation programme between Kyoto University´s AIESEC (International Association of Students Interested in Economics and Business Management) chapter and the AIESEC chapter at the so-called East Mediterranean University (EMU) in the occupied area, ten Japanese students have arrived in the occupied area.During their two-week stay, the Japanese students will participate in various scientific research on issues like education, Turco-Islamic civilization and women´s rights. (MY) [08] New ``draft law'' on tourismAccording to AVRUPA (4.8.99) the so-called state minister and deputy prime minister, Mustafa Akinci, has declared that the new ``draft law'' on tourism is ready and it will be submitted to the so-called assembly for approval during this legislative period.He made this statement during a meeting with the chairman of the ``Turkish Cypriot Tourism and Travel Agencies Union'', Hasim Rahvancioglou. (MY) [09] Chick-pea production in the occupied areaAccording to VATAN (4.8.99) the so-called minister of agriculture and forestry, Irsen Kuchuk, went to Ankara yesterday to sign a ``protocol'' for producing chick-pea in the ``TRNC'' and to participate in the ``festival of chick-pea harvest'' which is organized in Mersin between the 4th and 8th of August.Replying to a reporter´s question before his departure, Irsen Kuchuk explained that the ``protocol'' would be for two years and the production of chick-pea in the occupied area will cost $87,000. 63,000 dollars will be given by the pseudo-government and the rest by the ``Union of Exporters in Turkey''. (MY) [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS[10] AVRUPA again criticizes EcevitAn editorial in the ``Kalay'' column in AVRUPA (4.8.99) strongly criticizes Ecevit´s statement that there is ``no problem in Cyprus'' and wonders why then are billions of pounds spent on armaments and why are 30 thousand Turkish troops stationed in Cyprus. In a sarcastic manner it says: ``Most probably these arms are for defending the eggs of the partridges which are being eaten by crows and our 30 thousand troops in Cyprus are for game keeping''.The article further says that ``when Ecevit declared that had they wanted, they could have occupied the whole of the island, he was thus admitting that half of the island is being occupied by Turkey''. The article concludes by saying that if Ecevit gets the EU membership promise with the US help, then he will come and tell Denktash: ``Denktash, although there is no problem in Cyprus, you have to sit around the negotiation table''.
