    [01] Greek Cypriot´s `trial´ completed

    KIBRIS (12.8.99) reports that Greek-Cypriot Rogiros Georgiou of Canadian citizenship, who was abducted by the occupation regime on July 21, appeared before an illegal court yesterday.

    The so-called trial was completed yesterday and the decision of the illegal military court will be announced on 13th August.. Until then, Rogiros will continue to be held by the occupation regime.

    [02] Invasion celebrations

    According to KIBRIS (12.8.99) the occupation regime will celebrate the second phase of the Turkish invasion (14.8.74) with ceremonies at Lefka, Giaos, Maratha, Aloa and Santalaris.

    [03] Wheat & Barley sale to Turkey

    KIBRIS (12.8.99) reports that the ``Institute of Soil Products'' (TUK) and the ``Office of Soil Crops of Turkey ``(TMO) signed a protocol yesterday.

    According to the protocol, signed by the corresponding chairmen, ``TMO is going to purchase up to 10,000 tons of wheat and barley from ``TUK''.

    The so-called Agriculture and Forestry Minister Irsen Kuchuk and other ``state officials'' were present at the signing of the protocol. Fifty percent of the cost will be paid in advance and the remainder within 45 days. The products will be transported from the occupied harbour of Famagusta. Moreover, Irsen Kuchuk stated, during the meeting, that Munir Karan of the Vabnet Entegre A-S meat industry came to Cyprus to give advice on the operation of meat factories.

    Munir said that they worked to overcome the difficulties of the factories in the occupied area. If meat factories apply the suggestions and advice given,, the problem of meat and animal smuggling will be eliminated.

    [04] Struga - Famagusta twinning

    According to KIBRIS (12.8.99), contacts have commenced between occupied Famagusta and the town of Struga of FYROM for their twinning.

    On the initiative of the ``Municipality'' of Famagusta the so-called Foreign Affairs Ministry approved twinning of the two cities and the relevant documents have been exchanged.

    On behalf of the ``Macedonia-N. Cyprus Friendship Society'' Ulker Diso Ulku who is on an acquaintance visit in the district of Famagusta, met with the ``Vice-president'' Ilker -Atalay.

    Atalay stated that he would do everything for the development of this Friendship, underlining the importance of this event.

    It is also noted the Famagusta ``municipality'' has been invited to ``Struga Poetry Night'' festival.

    [05] Canadian delegation-education

    According to KIBRIS (12.8.99), ``state officials'' confirmed that a Canadian educational delegation continued its contacts in the occupied area.

    The so-called Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu said that the Canadian delegation informed him of their views.

    Meanwhile, the Supreme Education Board (YOK) decided to close the illegal International America University (UAU).

    The Canadian delegation visiting the occupied area, is interested in the UAU. Eroglu said: The fact that the degrees are to be recognized by such a distant country as Canada is very important. But it is only a thought for the moment. Despite our good intentions, we are not the ones to decide''.

    The so-called Education and Culture Minister Mehmet Altinay stated: ``Any university, which does not have a government licence, cannot be sold to another university''. He added if the Canadian delegation desired to open a university in the occupied area, it will be in accordance with existing education regulations.

    [06] Pork smuggling

    KIBRIS (12.8.99) reports that 10 tons of pork have been smuggled in a week from the free to the occupied area. The meat was sold at 260,000 TL per kilo.

    The Chairman of the Turkish-Cypriot stock-breeding union, Ali Osman Can, said that they have still got many problems.
