[01] Bleak domestic and foreign picture in Turkey

In a commentary in Istanbul Akit (11.8.99) under the title ``As the Pot Boils'' Abdurrahman Dilipak refers to the important domestic issues faced by Turkey which include the amendment to the law on political parties (the case for the closure of the Virtue Party FP is continuing); amnesty (Ocalan execution depends on that); debates on social security bill, school fees, the amendment to the law; the imam-hatips (Religious schools), and headscarves.

With such debates in progress, the writer notes, Ecevit is expected to pay a visit to the United States. In short, he remarks, a political earthquake will hit the country in its fullest sense.

He goes on to refer to the uncertainty in the Balkans, Cyprus, Chechnya, Kashmir, Uzbekistan and elsewhere. He expresses the view that neither the government nor the opposition are able to propose solutions to the urgent problems of the country, adding:

``The economic situation is for all to see. The social tensions, search for social peace, suicides, murders, nervous breakdowns, and bankruptcies are all hitting the country at the same time. It looks as if we are in for a hard winter.''

While some movement and relaxation is expected in the economy in September and October, he underlines that the general trend does not inspire hope.

Regarding foreign issues he notes that Ankara has no clear position on how to deal with the EU relations, the NATO and the United States. There is neither clarity in the policy on Israel, the Islamic world, the Balkans, and the Caucasus, not with the Armenian or (Greek) Patriairchate files.

Profiteering and robbery, carried out behind the smokescreen of terrorism and reactionism is as rampant as ever, he says, while the lobby that exploits terrorism, war, and reactionism is producing new scenarios and plots.

    [02] Clinton-Ecevit talks

According to a report in Istanbul MILLIYET, (12.8.99) President Clinton proposed that Turkey´s economy and matters related to energy, the Cyprus problem, human rights and arms transfers be included on the agenda of the talks.

The paper adds that the approach the sides maintain on Washington´s five points is as follows:

``Cyprus: The Greek-Greek Cypriot lobby has put pressure on Clinton. Consequently, he wants the Cyprus problem to be quickly solved. He has called for the resumption of the Cyprus talks without preconditions. However, Turkey has put forward the condition that the ``TRNC'' right to equal sovereignty be recognized before the talks are resumed.

Human Rights: Clinton has been criticized by a number of circles, which are sensitive on human rights, for deciding to participate in the OSCE meeting in Turkey. That is why he called for reforms shortly after Workers Party of Kurdistan leader Abdullah Ocalan´s trial ended.

Transfer of Arms: Ankara wants the White house administration to make a more strenuous effort to remove the obstacles the Congress has placed against arms transfers to Turkey.

Turkey´s Economy: Ecevit plans to visit Washington as the head of a government that supported international arbitration, which the United States called for long ago. Turkey wants the United States to make more investments and increase its textile quotas.

Energy: Clinton will ask Turkey to take measures to facilitate the financing of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project. On his part, Ecevit will urge the United States to maintain its support for the project. He will defend the view that the measures taken for international arbitration in Turkey will remove the capital circles´ reservations against investments in energy projects.''

    [03] `British Residents´ Society

KIBRIS (13.8.99) reports that the organization ``British Residents´ Society'' founded by the English living in the occupied area donated to the Hospital of Sisklipos, in Kyrenia, an ``EKG system,'' worth 1,5 billion TL.

The so-called Minister Gulsen Bozkurt thanked the organization for its generosity.

The chairman of the organization, John Hebble Thwaite said that the money was raised at a dance, organized at the Dome hotel on 29 May 1999. He also pointed out that there will be more donations.

[07] Kyrenia/Alanya ferryboat line not worthwhile

KIBRIS (13.8.99) reports that the ferryboat line Kyrenia-Alanya and vice versa has made little difference in the number of visitors to the ``TRNC''. During the course of one a month 1,500 tourists travelled from the occupied harbour of Kyrenia to Alanya and only 1,300 tourists from Alanya to Kyrenia.

When asked why they did not travel to Kyrenia, tourists said they found the entry and exit fees at ``TRNC'' high.

They also said that the cost of living is higher than in Turkey and there is not so much entertainment.

The aim of the visit is to inform the people of ``TRNC'' about the work of this travel agency, which transfers tourists to the ``TRNC'' on charter flights using planes rented from ``Turkish Cypriot Arilines''.

The group of reporters will return to ``TRNC'' on 17 August. (DP)

[10] No military airport at Ay. Epiktitos

According to YENIDUZEN (13.8.99) , Mehmet Ali Talat the leader of RTP, in a party meeting in the occupied village of Ag. Epiktitos said:
