[01] Denktash: "We will defend the sovereignty of our state"

According to KIBRIS (4.7.00) an assessment meeting was held in the occupied area yesterday on the eve of the third round Cyprus proximity talks scheduled to begin in Geneva on 5 July with the participation of Turkish officials as well. Attending the meeting, under the chairmanship of Rauf Denktash, were "prime minister" Dervis Eroglu, some of the delegation members who will attend the talks, Turkish envoy Ertugrul Apakan, Turkish Embassy officials, and Turkish Ambassador to London Korkmaz Haktanir who will observe the talks in Geneva on behalf of Turkey.

Denktash issued a press release in connection after the meeting. He said:

"Once again, we will defend in detail the sovereignty of our state, which was established by our people through their free will, the independence and equality of our people, and the fact that a realistic compromise must be achieved on the basis of the existing status".

[02] Ecevit: "No Cyprus solution unless two separate, independent states accepted"

According to KIBRIS (4.7.00) Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit has claimed that the Turkish and Greek Cypriots will live in peace and security "if the existence of two separate states in Cyprus is accepted". Ecevit received Faik Koyuncuoglu, "Turkish Cypriot Fighters Association" chairman, and the delegation accompanying him.

In a statement during the meeting, which was held at the Prime Minister/s Office, Ecevit underlined the importance of providing continuous guarantee for the independence of the "TRNC". He noted: "In actual fact, we do not have any intention of taking the whole of the island".

"We want the Turkish Cypriots to rid themselves of the cruel embargoes and to attain the opportunities they deserve in every aspect. As it happens, this has been secured to a great extent. The rights gained by the Turkish Cypriots/ loyalty to their own freedom constitutes the biggest guarantee. The whole world has begun to admit that even if they do not recognize the TRNC in the diplomatic field this republic exists, the Turkish Cypriots are sovereign in north Cyprus, and the Greek Cypriots have no authority or sovereignty in this region. In this respect, a great distance has been covered. The rights and freedoms gained by the TRNC will never be taken away from it", Ecevit said.

Asked by a Turkish Cypriot journalist to comment on the 5 July talks and the economic difficulties in Cyprus, Ecevit said that "a very cruel economic embargo is being imposed on north Cyprus" He added:

"However, Turkey is always by the side of the TRNC. No matter how limited we are in our economic means, we are continuing to meet the economic needs of the Turkish Cypriots to the best of our ability, and we will continue to do so".

Ecevit also stressed that a result cannot be attained unless the Cyprus "reality" is accepted.

"This reality consists of the fact that there are two separate independent states in Cyprus. When they accept this, the two communities can live side by side, respecting one another, comfortably, peacefully, and in security. The important thing is for this reality to be accepted. However, no one can achieve anything by ignoring this reality which has existed for so many years", he claimed.

[03] Denktash issues statement supporting "security forces" commander

According to KIBRIS (4.7.00), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in a written statement, expressed support for Brigadier General Ozeyranli, so- called security forces commander. Denktash inter alia said: "The fact that the recent discussions over the police organization have reached proportions that also incorporate the highly respected and appreciated security forces command have deeply saddened us as well as our people. I believe that this discussion has now been finalized. The security forces are a constitutional institution of the TRNC. The commander of these forces is appointed with the consent of the TRNC president and the Turkish authorities, and he guides and administers our security forces, a constitutional institution of the TRNC. In executing this task, the command is answerable to the prime minister and to the president. In terms of military duties, the command is under the jurisdiction of the Turkish Cypriot peace forces command, and our police is being trained as a force that can reinforce our soldiers in the security forces in times of need. We are doing what is necessary given the current cease-fire situation and our numerical structure. Keeping our police forces under this command from a military aspect is a requirement of the Constitution, which was approved by the people through their own free will. It would be wrong to interpret this temporary measure as a concession from our sovereignty, because it is a constitutional measure approved by our people".

He concluded: "In my view, this subject should now be closed. At this opportunity, I feel it is my duty to once again convey my appreciation to the security forces commander for the success in the sacred duty he is fulfilling and the trust he has inspired in our people".

[04] Denktash says no final decision to emerge from talks

Anatolia Agency (5:09 hours, 4.7.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Tuesday that the proximity talks are being held to prepare grounds for face-to-face talks and added that "no results would come out" from the proximity talks which are starting in Geneva on Wednesday.

Denktash left the occupied area on Tuesday morning to go to Geneva. He will fly to Geneva from Istanbul.

Speaking to the reporters at occupied Tymbou airport, Denktash said he is going to Geneva to "defend a rightful case".

He claimed that the European Union made things more difficult to resolve by wrongly calling the Greek Cypriots as Cyprus in their EU candidacy. "Despite all this, I know that we will have no difficulties in expressing ourselves. Because, this is a very clear case, legally and politically. All they need is to see this. The truth is very obvious". Denktash further alleged the Greek Cypriots are using the sanctions which the "TRNC" has been imposing on the UN Peace Force, as an excuse to hinder the talks.

He said: "They are asking me what results might come out from these talks. As I said before these talks aim to prepare grounds for face-to-face talks. Therefore, there will be no final decision emerging from these talks. UN a7Secretary General Kofi Annan will start the talks and UN Secretary General Cyprus Special Representative Alvaro de Soto will supervise them". During the talks, Denktash said, they will discuss the Cyprus issue with all its aspects. Denktash also added that he doesn/t yet know when he will return from Geneva.

[05] Turkey/s War Academy members visit pseudostate

According to KIBRIS (4.7.00) a group of 111 academicians (as published) from Turkey/s War Academy are on a 3-day visit to the occupied area.

The Academy Commander, Major General Osman Pamukoglu, heads the group.

    They will depart on Wednesday.

[06] Karate team at championship in Azerbaidjan
