[01] DENKTASH, HASIPOGLU, EROGLU ADDRESS "ASSEMBLY"

Anatolia Agency (1056 hours, 2/10/2000) reports that a ceremony was staged in the so-called parliament of the pseudostate upon the beginning of the new legislation year. Speaking in the "parliament", Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said that "we are on a good path regarding the Cyprus question", but added that there are some people who exert efforts to turn this good situation into a tragic end.

Noting that the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan mentioned about a partnership in the beginning of the fourth round of the proximity talks on Cyprus, Denktash claimed that the Greek Cypriot side/s biggest complaint is about the partnership as they don/t want it.

Denktash said that Turkish Cypriots sat around the table in search for peace, not for tactics and added that the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and President Glafcos Clerides issued a statement noting that "we don/t say yes to anything other than federation." Denktash said that federation is also a partnership, but the Greek Cypriots reject a partnership.

"There will be equal and two sovereign states on Cyprus and they won/t give up their sovereignty", said Denktash and claimed that the aim and plan of the Greek Cypriot side is to make the Turks a minority in Cyprus.

"We are ready to make cooperation with the Greek Cypriots and to construct a roof based on two states," said Denktash.

So-called parliament speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu said in his part that the "TRNC" has its biggest and most serious economic crisis of its history, adding that there is no need to lose hope despite the negative conditions.

"They hope for an agreement on Cyprus", said Hasipoglu and noted that they support the proximity talks started to this end.

Hasipoglu claimed that the Greek Cypriots don/t and won/t share their economic development with them.

"Britain is also guilty for the situation today in Cyprus," said Hasipoglu and noted that "on this island, two small territories of Britain can be sovereign, but our 200,000 population and our territory which is 35 percent of the island can/t be sovereign. I believe that it is the time to bring onto agenda the bases of Britain on the island."

So-called premier Dervis Eroglu said that they want a solution which is based on "two states" on the island and on the guarantee of Turkey.

So called state minister and deputy premier Mustafa Akinci said in his part that the solution on Cyprus and the EU membership are closer today than yesterday.

    [02] "ASSEMBLY" DELEGATION RETURNS

According to KIBRIS (3.10.00) the so-called assembly delegation that went to Strasbourg to follow up the Fall delebrations of the Council of Europe/s Parliamentary Assembly (CEPA) returned to the occupied area the other day.

Upon arrival at the occupied Tymbou Airport, so-called deputy speaker Salih Cosar declared that the meeting in Strasbourg witnessed positive developments regarding the occupied area.

He said that during the delibrations they had the opportunity to meet with CEPA officials.

[03] TOURISM FROM BRITAIN AND GERMANY

KIBRIS/s (3.10.00) London correspondent Serhat Incili reports that the so- called deputy prime minister/s office undersecretary Bulent Kanol and the so-called coordinator of the "North Cyprus Tourism Centre" in London, Yilmaz Kalfaoglu, organized a press conference the other day and gave detailed information about tourism in the occupied area.

Kanol stressed that Britain was an important source of tourism for the occupied area and that last year there was a 30% increase in British tourist arrivals. Kanol noted that 160 thousand tourists from Turkey, 35 thousand from the UK and 15 thousand tourists from Germany arrived in the occupied area during last year.

Kanol pointed out that there was a 15% decrease in tourists arriving from Germany.

He said that the reason for this decrease was the collapse of the Istanbul Airlines, which was the major airline bringing in tourists to the occupied area.
