[01] Denktas: EU Membership Prior to Recognition Tantamount to Self-Denial Illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (16:30 hours, 08.2.01) reports that Rauf Denktash has

stated that "joining the EU or participating in activities toward EU membership before the status, sovereignty, and state of the Turkish Cypriots are recognized is tantamount to self-denial and poses a very great danger."

Denktas attended a luncheon hosted by the Rotary Club. In a statement before the luncheon, Denktas referred to the EU issue and said: "High- ranking EU bureaucrats are telling us not to talk about laws. Why should we not talk about laws? Because the entire world has accepted the Greek Cypriots as the legitimate government. So have we. Their application is appropriate. Then what is happening with you? Do not miss the train."

Claiming that the signature and guarantees of the Greek Cypriot side are not trustworthy, Denktas further alleged that decisions that will be adopted in EU courts might invalidate Turkish Cypriot rights. He claimed that "joining the EU or participating in activities toward EU membership before the status, sovereignty, and state of the Turkish Cypriots are recognized is tantamount to self-denial and poses a very great danger."

Noting the necessity of concluding a sound and lasting agreement with the Greek Cypriots "which will prevent them from attacking the Turkish Cypriots under the pretext of a domestic issue," as he put it, Denktas said that the time has come to assess the "approaching danger", the intentions of the Greek Cypriots and their supporters, and their reasons. He noted that if a consensus is not reached in the "assembly" on these issues then something is missing somewhere. Denktas said: "It is impossible to understand the federation-based initiatives being taken within our community in a bid to weaken us while the elected president of a people is pursuing a joint cause in agreement and in conciliation with Turkey and while the national front of this joint cause is a confederation."

[02] Denktas: "If Greek Cypriots get whole of Cyprus it would Be like a Dagger in the Heart of Anatolia"

Illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (11:30 hours, 8.2.01) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has said that "if the Greek Cypriots get the whole of Cyprus, it will be like a dagger in the heart of Anatolia". He was speaking during a visit by a group of teachers and students from the Istanbul Ata College.

Denktash stated that pro-Greek Cypriot circles claim that he prevents the solution of the Cyprus problem. "This is completely untrue", he said, adding: "I defend the guarantee agreements and I refuse to accept an agreement without Turkey so that we do not give up our rights to the Greek Cypriots at the negotiating table. We cannot have Greek Cypriot refugees living among us".

He stressed that the basic conditions for an agreement with the Greek Cypriots are the recognition of the "TRNC", Turkey's continued guarantees, and maintaining the current distribution of the two populations on the island. "Otherwise, the Greek Cypriots will throw the Turkish Cypriots out of the island in three to five years," he claimed.

[03] 45 Pro-Denktas Turkish Cypriot Organizations Condemn 'This Is Our Homeland Platform' Movement

A report in daily AVRUPA (7.2.01) under the title "45 Pro-Denktash Organizations Assault 41 Opposition Organizations", says that in a statement on the events that have recently taken place in the pseudostate, a group of 45 organizations has condemned the Turkish Cypriot Teachers' Union [KTOS] and the "This is Our Homeland Platform" movement.

The 45 organizations held a news conference at the premises of the "Association of Turkish Cypriot Fighters" in order to brief the participants on the issues discussed during the meeting.

In a joint statement read following an address made by Faik Koyuncuoglu, the 45 organizations have said that severe socio-economic problems have emerged due to the negligent performance and the mistakes committed in the past by the pseudostate administration.

Noting that support has been extended to the warnings made against the authorities and to the complaints made against the prevailing economic difficulties, the joint statement says that a number of organizations have exploited the strikes held by unions, thus directing these strikes against "TRNC" and Turkey.

Condemning the "This Is Our Homeland Platform," the joint statement says:

"We would like to tell the traitors and the KTOS officials--who have not raised our praiseworthy flag in any of their strikes, who have complained against the state to a UN officer, and who have tried to destroy the relations between TRNC and Turkey--that enough is enough."

Meanwhile, the joint statement laments the fact that "irresponsible traders in ideology who have seized control of the KTOS leadership are claiming that they are speaking on behalf of all the teachers, who possess all the national values and are attached to the homeland and motherland, which have sacrificed everything for the sake of the Turkish Cypriot people's struggle". Moreover, the joint statement condemns the endeavour of the KTOS officials as well as the officials of the 41 organizations to chant slogans and carry out protest marches against "TRNC".

Noting that in a news conference it has held on 2 February 2001, KTOS officials have claimed that the advertisement appearing in newspapers does not contain any remarks against Turkey, the Turkish people, or the Turkish soldiers, the joint statement issued by the 45 organizations says that the same KTOS has said the following on its Internet site: "There is fascism in Cyprus. Turkey is running Cyprus through fascist methods."

The joint statement goes on to say that thus, KTOS has defined Turkey to the international community as an occupation force in Cyprus. According to the joint statement, by conveying differing messages to the "TRNC people" and foreign interest groups, KTOS and its followers have clearly exposed their real intentions.

The joint statement notes that the 45 organizations that are signatories to the joint statement will not allow KTOS to destroy the existing relations between "TRNC" and Turkey for the sake of foreign interest groups.

The 45 organizations note in their joint statement that they are waiting for the 41 organizations that have gathered under the "This Is Our Homeland Platform" to unite under the "Sovereign TRNC Is Ours Platform" in order to reply to President Glafkos Clerides who has said: "We do not wish to give to the future generations a Cyprus that is smaller than the one we have inherited." The statement goes on to say that however, "the aforementioned circles are helpless enough to fail to notice the ploys prepared against Turkey and TRNC with the help of the EU dream".

Claiming that Europe seeks to remove Cyprus from the sphere of influence of the Turks by destroying the guarantorship rights of Turkey, the 45 organizations have stressed in the joint statement that they will see to it that Europe fails in its attempt.

Indicating that "TRNC" exists for Turkey and that Turkey, for its part, exists for "TRNC", the joint statement says that "as part of the honourable Turkish world, TRNC will live forever with the help of the power and inspiration it draws from the Ataturkist thought".

The following are the names of the 45 organizations that have put their signatures to the subject matter joint statement:

"The Association of Turkish Cypriot Fighters and the nine branches and units affiliated with it; the Headquarters of the Association of Families of Disabled Soldiers and all its branches; the Headquarters of the Fighters of the Turkish Peace Forces and all its branches; the Association of Retired Non-commissioned Officers; the Union of Erenkoy Fighters; the Union of Working Women; Kamu-Sen [Union of Civil Servants]; Hur-Is [Federation of Free Workers' Union]; Kamu-Is [Union of Public Sector Workers]; Ilk-Sen; Buro-Is; Hava-Sen; Bay-Sen; Union of Baf [Paphos] Turks; the Institution of Turkish Cypriot History; the Association of Retired Fighters; the Foundation for the Promoting of and Solidarity with Turkish Cypriot Fighters; the Association of Bulgarian Migrants; the Association of the Foundations and Religious Affairs Directorate Retirees; the Union of Turkish Cypriot Parliamentarians; the Council of Turkish Cypriot Women; the Association of Retirees from the KKTC Police; the Association of Turkish Islamic Culture; the Association of Turkish Cypriot Teachers; the Association of University Graduate Women; the Arasta Artisans; the Association of War Veterans; the KKTC Research Center; the Turkish Cypriot World Order Idealist Hearth Organization; the Solidarity Union; Kamu-Koop; Kultur Koop; the Association of Bogaz Sancagi Fighters; DAU Per-Sen; the Association of Democratic Integration; the Association of Nicosia Urban Health Development Center; the Union of Turkish Cypriot Journalists; the Union of Turkish Cypriot Women; the Turkish Cypriot Scouts Organization; the Association of Solidarity with Retiree Nicosia Police; the Association of Retirees; the Association of Retired Veteran Commanders; the Turkish Cypriot Press Council; the Turkish Cypriot Industry Chamber; and the Association of Ataturkist Thought."
