[01] The Turkish National Security Council is meeting today under new structure. Cyprus among its agenda

Istanbul HURRIYET (29.10.01) reports that the National Security Council (NSC) will hold its first meeting today (30.10.01) following its reorganization under the recent constitutional amendments, which gave the majority of seats to its civilian members. The NSC, which was made up of 5 military officials and 4 civilian members in addition to the President before the changes, now has a new structure wherein the number of generals remained unchanged, but the number of its civilian members rose to 9.

The NSC meeting, which will start at 2 p.m. at the Cankaya Presidential Mansion under the chairmanship of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, will also be attended by the three Deputy Prime Ministers and Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Turk in accordance with the amendment to article 118 of the Constitution. Thus, the NSC will convene with participation of 14 members instead of 10.

Today's NSC meeting will discuss a proposal to extend the state of emergency in Diyarbakir, Hakkari, Sirnak and Tunceli for 4 months from the end of November. Other items on the agenda include the latest situation in the military operation continuing in Afghanistan, the possibility of dispatching Turkish troops to the region as a peacekeeping force, military training to be provided for fighters loyal to the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan, the progress made in the struggle being maintained against separatist groups, Turkish-EU relations, the Cyprus question as well as the ESDI [European Security and Defence Identity].

[02] More mainland Turks arrive in the occupied areas without control

AVRUPA (29.10.01) reports that while the number of visitors who have arrived in the occupied areas by sea has reached 300,000 in 2000, this number is expected to reach 350,000 in 2001.

Upon instructions issued by the military authorities and the Turkish Embassy, visitors coming from Turkey are not questioned about their money, their residence or address!

There are even visitors who arrive in occupied Kyrenia without any money and others who ask for financial aid in order to pay bus fees for their travel to Nicosia...

It has been ascertained that the incidents of theft and usury, which have reached incredible dimensions in the pseudostate, stem from the absence of any control on the entry and exit of visitors.

Meanwhile, an entrance-exit stamp that recently went missing from the occupied Kyrenia port has not been found yet!

[03] Erhan Arikli admits that he was the organizer of Tassos Isaak/s murder

Erhan Arikli of "Kibrisli" (29.10.01) admits that he was the organizer of the murder of the Greek Cypriot Tassos Isaak during the incidents in the buffer zone, near Derynia village in 1996. Answering to accusations written against him in "Avrupa", Mr Arikli writes, among other things, the following:

".They announced to the public that I am wanted by Interpol as if this was very important information. I, however, am proud of this warrant and I carry it on my neck as a sign of honour, because I was not involved either in smuggling or in swindling, stealing and treachery, like some others did.

I was only opposed to the bastards who wanted to violate my borders and raise a Greek flag in Kyrenia and I made them regret for the fact that they came to my borders.

It is true that a Greek Cypriot youth died in these incidents. As a person I was sorry for this sad event but as a patriot I was happy, because no Greek Cypriot would again step my land without my permission. In the end this happened. That incident was the last one. Have you seen an adventurer Greek Cypriot trying to violate our borders since then?

One day after the incident I gave a Press conference and announced that I had not been there when this happened and that if I had been there things would not have changed and may be many more Greek Cypriots would have died. I was not one of those seen in these pictures. The Greek Cypriots, however, because they know that I was the person who organized the counteraction they gave my name to Interpol as one of the murderers of that poor Greek Cypriot.

I did not advertise this event and I did not undertake any initiative to defend myself at the European courts. I applied several times to the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the TRNC and asked them what to do. They didn't even care. I gave it up. .This is the issue...".

[04] Soldiers serving in the occupation army are being beaten

"Avrupa" (30.10.01) reports that a Turkish Cypriot named Devran Tureray, will go to Ankara in order to undergo kidney transplant, because one of his kidneys does not function as a result of the fact that he had been severely beaten when he had been serving in the occupation army in 1999.

The paper writes that Mr Tureray had been beaten by his first lieutenant, Ibrahim Dagman.

Meanwhile, yesterday "Avrupa" wrote that the soldiers of the company of the 2nd Regiment of the occupation army in Kokkina village, were in turmoil because their commander beats them very often, behaves in a very bad manner and subjects them to major punishments. The paper reports that the soldiers are fed up with all these and they are almost thinking of making a rebellion. Some soldiers are punished by being forced to «guard at the sentry stark naked», concludes "Avrupa".

[05] Denktas argues that obtaining a passport of the Republic of Cyprus is treachery

KIBRIS (30.10.01) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas claimed yesterday that those Turkish Cypriots who acquire passports of the Republic of Cyprus commit treachery.

Mr Denktas said that there is no other definition for describing the act of those who take the passport of a «nation» with which their «nation» is in war. The Turkish Cypriot leader alleged that saying that the so-called "passports" of the pseudostate are not valid in the other countries is not an excuse for using the passports of the Republic of Cyprus and called on the Turkish Cypriots to struggle in order to obtain the right to travel with the "passports" of the pseudostate.

Mr Denktas urged the Turkish Cypriots to tell the world: "The right to travel is a human right. I can exercise this right by using only this passport. I do not say to recognize my state. Recognize my right to travel".
