[01] Denktas claims he has made concessions on everything, except on the equal partnership status and the guarantees of Turkey

KIBRIS (05.04.02) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas has claimed that he has made concessions on every aspect of the Cyprus problem except on the issues of the so-called "equal partnership status", the "minority rights" and the guarantees of Turkey.

Talking yesterday during a meeting with a delegation of Turkish mayors, who are illegally visiting the occupied areas of Cyprus, Mr Denktas alleged once again that an agreement was not reached until now in spite of his "concessions" because the basic aim of the Greek Cypriot side "is to take control of the whole Cyprus and realize Enosis (unification with Greece) by eradicating the Treaty of Guarantees and the equilibrium between Turkey and Greece brought into Cyprus by the Laussagne Agreements".

The Turkish Cypriot leader expressed his fear that events similar to those, which are happening in Palestine, might be repeated in Cyprus. He referred once again to the realities in Cyprus and addressing the whole world and the states involved in the Cyprus problem said: "The realities are there. The Greek Cypriots are not the government of the Turkish Cypriots. They have never been, have no right to be and will never be. There are two separate states in Cyprus. Help us create a partnership. Tell the Greek Cypriots: 'you are not and cannot be the government of the Turkish Cypriots. Abandon this desire'. Then you will see that the issue will be solved within a short period of time".

[02] Ahmet Mithat Berberoglu, the first chairman of RTP died

YENIDUZEN (05.04.02) reports that Ahmet Mithat Berberoglu, the first chairman of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) died last night at the age of 80 at Akcicek hospital in the occupied city of Kyrenia.

Reporting on the death of Berberoglu AFRIKA newspaper writes that he was the only candidate against the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas during the 1973 "elections", but he was forced to withdraw his candidature after being threatened with a gun during a meeting in the Turkish "embassy" in the occupied part of Nicosia. During the same year he was convicted because of an article he had written and spent 10 days in prison.

[03] The Turkish Cypriot leader opened an exhibition of photographs of the US ambassador to Nicosia

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, opened yesterday an exhibition with photographs of the US ambassador to Nicosia, Donald Bandler, reports KIBRIS (05.04.02).

According to the paper the exhibition under the title "In Nicosia" is taking place at HP Gallery in the occupied part of Nicosia.

[04] The Fifth meeting of the Organization of Eurasia Islamic Council will be held in the occupied areas

According to KIBRIS (05/04/02) the Fifth meeting of the Organization of Eurasia Islamic Council, which is organised by the Turkish Department of Religious Affairs, will be held in Salamis Bay Conti Resort Hotel in occupied Famagusta between 15-19 April. Fifty-eight religious leaders and representatives from Turkey, Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Crimea Autonomous Republic, Kosovo, Northern Iraq, Lithuania, FYROM, Mongolia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Yugoslavia and Western Thrace will attend the meeting.

[05] BASIN-SEN met with the Cyprus Journalists Association in Pyla

KIBRIS (05/04/02) reports that the Turkish Cypriot Journalists and Press Industry Workers Union (BASIN-SEN) met recently with the Cyprus Journalists Association in Pyla, where they exchanged views on issues regarding their work. In a statement, BASIN-SEN said that the organization of joint meetings and activities between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot Journalists is useful and necessary. The two organizations have decided to continue the dialogue started with this meeting.

They also stressed that they support the unification of the island, the improvement of the relations and trust between the two communities and efforts of finding a lasting and peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem, whereby the security and the human rights of all the Cypriots will be guaranteed. The journalists and the media, within this framework of efforts, should play a positive role.

[06] A new organization against the occupation regime will be set up in the occupied areas

VOLKAN (05/04/02) calls on the pseudostate to wake up, because a new organization with the name "Front for Peace and Democracy" ( FRONT) is going to be founded in the occupied areas against the occupation regime, because the activities of the platform "This Country is Ours" are not considered sufficient enough. The paper criticizes the editor-in-chief of the Turkish Cypriot newspaper AFRIKA, Sener Levent, who in a programme of the Turkish Cypriot radio SIM FM, attacked the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas, Sukru Sina Gurel, Prof. Mumtaz Sosyal, National People's Movement, VOLKAN, Taner Etkin, and Sabahattin Ismail and described Turkey as an occupying power in Cyprus.

According to VOLKAN, in the same radio programme Sener Levent said that the National People's Movement are in the agenda of the army and that the politicians are taking orders from the army, and added: "This order is an order of occupation. In this order there is no free choice, the people's will is not reflected. This regime is an occupation regime. Those who are not against this situation are not leftists. Our aim is to liberate this country from Turkey and not to collect rubbish at the municipalities. This is a referendum. If you are against the regime, you will vote for us. This structure of the occupation regime has changed nothing. If the left-wing parties, the Republican Turkish party (RTP), the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) and the Patriotic Unity Movement (PUM) come together against the regime, it would not be necessary to establish our party. We founded our party and we came to the front, because we will say what they couldn't be able to say. The party will say in the political arena what has been written in our newspaper."
