[01] Serdar Denktas announces that the so-called ministers of sport and economy will be visiting Azerbaijan and that Azerbaijan and Iran will open office unofficially in the occupied areas of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspapers (31.08.05) reports that Mr Serdar Denktas, so-called Minister of Foreign Affairs of the occupation regime, has announced that the so-called Ministers of youth and Sports and Economy and Tourism of the regime, Mr Ozkan Yorgancioglu and Dervis Kemal Deniz will shortly be visiting Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, for contacts.

In statements yesterday in Baku, Mr Denktas expressed the belief that during the meetings which the Turkish Cypriot businessmen conducted yesterday with their Azeri counterparts, they would make steps for launching cooperation between them and said that he hoped that these steps would contribute both to the economic development of the Turkish Cypriots and to the political developments and the solution in Cyprus.

Mr Denktas noted that the relations of the occupation regime with Azerbaijan will be broadened from every aspect with the contacts which will take place within the next few days.

Mr Denktas said that in spite of the pressure exerted by the Greek Cypriot side, yesterday they were able to meet with President Aliyev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elmar Memediyarov and to secure at the highest level the promise that the relations between the two countries will be developed.

He noted that Azerbaijan will fully support the pseudostate during the meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference which will take place next month and that Azerbaijan will submit a report regarding the pseudostate to the General Secretariat.

Mr Denktas said also that next month the building of Azerbaijans Foundation in the occupied areas of Cyprus will be opened and that this building will also be the unofficial office of the representative of Azerbaijan and Iran in occupied northern Cyprus.

Mr Denktas noted that flights between Azerbaijan and the occupied areas of Cyprus will definitely be taking place that the issue of whether or not these flights are profitable from the economic point of view will be evaluated, but knowing the political dimension of these flights they could be subsidized, if needed.

Mr Denktas said that in the delegations that will be visiting Azerbaijan within the next months members of the government belonging to the Republican Turkish Party will also participate.

Mr Denktas pointed out that Azerbaijan will always be supporting the pseudostate and that its help to the Turkish Cypriots will be very visible. He expressed the belief that the gains they ensured during their visit to Baku will be also ensured during visits that they will shortly organize to other countries as well and that they have taken positive messages in this direction.

Mr Denktas said that they did not ask for recognition of the pseudostate during their contacts in Azerbaijan, but for an active support on every issue and contact.

KIBRIS reports that responding to a question, Mr Denktas admitted that the RTP is unsatisfied about their visit to Azerbaijan and about a statement made by the so-called minister of economy, Mr Dervis Kemal Deniz.

Meanwhile, local AFRIKA newspaper (31.08.05) reports that after the reactions caused in the public opinion for the fact that the visit to Azerbaijan has been turned into a Danktas show, the so-called ministry of foreign affairs of the occupation regime issued a statement yesterday arguing that the sum of money spent for the visit was not important for the pseudostate. According to some information, the visit to Baku cost 62 thousand dollars.

[02] Serdar Denktas assesses President Chiracs statements as intended for internal consumption and not based on principles

Ankara TRT 2 television (30/08/05) broadcast the following on statements made by the so-called Foreign Minister of Ankaras puppet regime in the areas of the Republic of Cyprus occupied by 40,000 Turkish troops since 1974:

Serdar Denktas, foreign minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus) who is in Azerbaijan, has responded to French President Chirac's demands for clarifications from Turkey concerning Cyprus.

Denktas said: All the messages emitted from France at present are directed to its domestic public. During his visit in Azerbaijan, Serdar Denktas assessed to TRT Chirac's demands for clarifications from Turkey concerning Cyprus.

He said: I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the Greek Cypriot side, Greece, and the EU do not desire a Turkey that has given up its EU perspective. The pressure on us and on Turkey mainly will increase after 3 October. In its capacity of an EU member country, which it has unjustly acquired, the Greek Cypriot side's demands will increase even more now. We should be prepared for this. We have nothing to lose and nothing to fear as long as we are aware of the demands and can act jointly on the extent that we can move backward.

[03] The Additional Protocol to be taken to Turkish assembly for approval

Turkish HURRIYET newspaper (31.08.05) reports that the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan stated that the Additional Protocol, regarding the extension of the Customs Union with the Greek Cypriot Administration, as he called the Republic of Cyprus, will be taken to the Turkish parliament for approval.

Mr Erdogan, who was speaking at a meeting of his partys central committee, did not state the date that this issue will be discussed at the Turkish Assembly.

During the same meeting Mr Erdogan referred to the recent statements made by Angela Merkel, the chairman of the German Christian Democrat Party who stated that Turkey could have a privileged relationship with the EU instead of becoming full member of the Union. Mr Erdogan stated that this cannot be accepted. In addition, Mr Erdogan referred to the statements made by the French President Jacques Chirac about the recognition of the Republic of Cyprus and noted that these statements are made for domestic public.

[04] An important archaeological site was found at the occupied village of Galinoporni

Turkish Cypriot daily YENIDUZEN newspaper (31/08/05) reported that a great discovery was made at the occupied village of Galinoporni. Twenty one archaeologists from Germany, Turkey, Nigeria, Palestine, Iran and the pseudostate found an important archaeological site, which is dated back to the Early Copper Era at the King Hill in the occupied village of Galinoporni.

The excavation is conducted with the cooperation of a research centre of the East Mediterranean University (EMU) and the German foundation of Fritz Thyssen Stftung. The works at the archaeological site are being carried out under the supervision of Prof. Martin Bartelheim and the teacher of EMU Bulent Kizilduman.

[05] Three critical days in EU-Turkey relations

NTVMNBC internet site (31/08/05), under the above title, reported the following:

The following three days will mark the course of relations between the European Union and Turkey.

Ties between Turkey and the European Union face a tough test over the next three days, with a series of meetings of representatives of the blocs member states set to chart the course of Ankaras accession process.

A meeting of the EUs Permanent Representatives (COREPER) starting on Wednesday and the informal meeting of Foreign Ministers on September 1-2 will both discuss Turkeys position of not recognising the Greek Cypriot state as part of its signing of an expanded customs unions deal for new members of the bloc and the frame work for negotiations between the EU and Turkey.

The meeting of COREPER is serving as a preliminary to the foreign ministers meeting in Newport in England starting Thursday. Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul will attend the second day of the meetings in England.

It has been reported that France, with the possible support of countries such as Austria and Denmark, might try to have a statement issued by the meeting that Turkey should not begin accession negotiations but offered a privileged partnership included. This idea is opposed by EU term president England as well as Italy, Spain, Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration.

Although heated debate on the question of Turkeys membership bid has been foreseen at these meetings experts do not expect a surprise or negative outcome.
