[01] Akinci sent to the "constitutional court" the "law" on the "overseas youth coordination office"

Illegal Bayrak television (17.06.16) broadcast that the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Ak?nc? has sent the "law" and the "protocol" on the establishment of the "overseas youth coordination office" to the "constitutional court".

According to a written statement issued by the "presidency", Ak?nc? sent the "bill" to the "constitutional court" on the basis that the "law" contained articles which are in violation of the "TRNC constitution".

Bayrak further said that "He will be seeking the constitutional court's view as to whether or not the entire protocol and articles 1, 2, 3and 7 of the law are constitutional".

[02] Akinci says he will continue to struggle for the "rights of the Turkish Cypriot youth in sports"

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (17.06.16) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has argued that "as persons who have undertaken a responsibility, our duty is to do in full whatever is necessary for paving the way of the Turkish Cypriot youth both in football and in other fields of sports and exerting efforts on this issue tirelessly".

Addressing the reward ceremony on the occasion of the ending of the 2015-16 football season in the occupied area of Cyprus, Akinci pointed out to the importance of the "TRNC national team" and athletes participating in some international tournaments in spite of the so-called embargoes allegedly implemented on the "TRNC".

Referring to the participation of the "TRNC national team" in the "Conifa 2016 World Cup" organized in "Abkhazia", Akinci noted that limited contacts which could be made are important, but what is actually important is the Turkish Cypriot "people" being able to take the place they deserve. "We will struggle tirelessly for this", he said adding: "We all know that the basic opening to the world will come with the solution, but we do not stay inactive, we do not wait doing nothing. It is our duty to use every opportunity and undertake any kind of initiative we can in the international field".

Referring to the candidature of occupied Keryneia for hosting the 2019 European Masters Games, Akinci said that "making north Cyprus one of the candidate countries is important".

[03] Akinci's statements on the opening of Deryneia barricade are described as "insufficient"

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (17.06.16) reports that Yilmaz Parlan, spokesman of the shopkeepers in the within the walls area in occupied Famagusta, described as "insufficient" Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci's statements regarding the opening of the barricade in Deryneia area. The shopkeepers held an activity last weekend demanding the opening of that crossing point. In a written statement on behalf of the shopkeepers, Parlan noted that the statements made by Akinci on Monday after their activity have deeply sorrowed them and congratulated him for "talking so much and saying nothing". He said that what they expect is the implementation of the decisions taken not their reaffirmation.

Referring to the problems which the shopkeepers are facing and reiterating their demand as regards the opening of the Deryneia barricade, Parlan addressed Akinci and noted that as "people of this country" they want from him to "open the gate immediately and show the world that you want peace, if you allege that you want a federal solution". "It is in your hand to turn this negative situation into an opportunity", he said adding that "is the only thing you should do to show political will".

He noted that they do not want Akinci to "obey", but to "exhibit in favor of the Turkish Cypriots" the same "agility" he showed by taking the plane sent by Ankara and participating in the recent summit held in Istanbul, 24 hours after his spokesman had stated that he would not participate.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (17.06.16) alleges that the Greek Cypriot side has only yesterday sent the necessary document by which it permits the materialization of projects as regards the opening of the crossing points in Deryneia and Apliki. The paper argues that these permits are one of the standard procedures for bi-communal projects and alleges that the Turkish Cypriot side gave its permission immediately, while the same document of the Greek Cypriot side was submitted yesterday with a delay of 20 days.

Replying to Kibris Postasi's questions, Tiziana Zennaro, UNDP-PFF's Director, confirmed that the document reached UNDP's offices yesterday, but refrained from commenting why the document delayed. She said that further statements on the issue would be made today.

Moreover, "sources" from Akinci's office told the paper that Akinci asked UNDP and EU officials during their meeting on Monday about the delay of this document. The "sources" said that they did not know why the Greek Cypriots delayed and added that the document includes only two sentences saying "we do not object to the beginning of the project and we accept the implementation of the project".

[04] Teachers say students are brainwashed by Islamic dervish orders

Turkish Cypriot daily Detay newspaper (17.06.16) reports that shock was created by allegations as to the reasons for which some students in occupied Akanthou's school did not go to take their school reports. In statements at a joint press conference, the Turkish Cypriot primary and secondary school teachers' trade unions (KTOS and KTOEOS respectively) evaluated the past school year and underlined the problems experienced in the field of education.

They said that as a result of an investigation they had carried out, they were informed that some students from occupied Akanthou school had been sent to a house of the "Suleymandji dervish order" in occupied Agios Ilias village instead of going to receive their school reports.

Sener Elcil, general secretary of KTOS, said that the children were offered religious education in the dervish order's house and added that the same dervish order has houses in occupied Keryneia, Nicosia and Famagusta areas. According to Elcil, the students are brainwashed in these houses and when his union tried to inform the "ministry of education" on this issue, they found no "official" to talk to.

Elcil noted that efforts are exerted for "redesigning" the Turkish Cypriot community with such religious activities and that "some are playing" with their religion and beliefs, without anyone to prevent this.

[05] The platform "We reject" does not oppose Turkey

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (17.06.16) reports that the member of the platform "We reject" Umut Oksuz, speaking on behalf of the platform, said that a wrong perception was created in the community regarding the youth members of the platform and the youth was shown as being opposed to Turkey. He explained that the aim of the platform is that some chapters which are included in the agreement regarding the "youth coordination office" are contrary to the "constitution" and should be amended. He stressed that they are not against of the opening of the "office". He further said that the aid that will be given to the "country" and to the "youth" will be beneficial for the whole community, adding that the best example of this, is the EU support office, which operates in the "TRNC".

Oksuz noted that among the youth are participants from every leftist or rightist segment. He also announced that the platform "We reject" will march in front of the "presidency" and the "parliament".

[06] "Black Sear Culture Association" reacts against Evkaf's decision not to offer a building plot for its offices

Turkish Cypriot daily Vatan newspaper (17.06.16) reports that the "Black Sear Culture Association", (TR. Note: An association of settlers from Black Sea region) criticized Evkaf arguing that a plot of land in occupied Keryneia that the "Association" demanded for constructing its offices and a students' house was given to an individual instead, without the opening of tenders.

In statements, the chairman of the "association", Baki Aygun said that they have 18,000 natural members and argued that together with promoting and preserving the culture of the Black Sea region, they also promote the breakaway regime abroad.

He also stated that the opening of an office in occupied Keryneia has been a necessity for many years due to the increased number of members they have from this area.

Aygun also called on the "government" to step in on the issue.

[07] Self-style minister Durust reiterated that "a strong TRNC should be at the negotiating table"

According to Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (17.06.16), the self-styled minister of public works and communications Kemal Durust, who is currently holding contacts in Turkey, visited yesterday the Iskenderun Trade port in Hatay.

During his visit Durust said that "although the TRNC is on an island, we have not benefitted enough from the maritime". He noted: "We will create new economic models with motherland Turkey's vision and support", adding that their south neighbours (translator's note: he refers to the Greek Cypriot side) will feel a bit disturbed about it. He concluded by saying that they will continue to stay on the course that "a strong TRNC should be at the negotiating table".

Turkish Cypriot daily Vatan newspaper (17.06.16) reports that the number of "municipalities" which have signed the agreement for subscription to the distribution of the water transferred from Turkey during the transition period, has reached 18, after the occupied "municipalities" of Lapithos and Lisi decided to participate in the project.

This statement was made by the so-called ministry of agriculture and natural resources.

[10] Simsek: Despite Brexit noise and migrant woes, Turkey committed to EU ties

Turkish Hurriyet Daily News (17.06.16) reports that Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek said in an interview that Turkey remains committed to closer ties with the European Union despite strains in the relationship, and wants to deepen a customs union to become the bloc's third largest trade partner,.

Turkey's relations with Europe have soured over demands it amend its anti-terrorism laws on human rights grounds under a deal to curb migration, prompting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last month to angrily warn: "We're going our way, you go yours."

"Despite all the noise, I think it is in our interests to remain anchored to Europe," Simsek told Reuters late on June 15 in an interview in his office in Ankara, when asked about a possible "Brexit."

"From our perspective, we see Europe as a source of inspiration, as a reference point when it comes to strengthening the rule of law, enhancing standards of democracy ... and I don't see a substitute to the EU in Turkey's near geography."

But he described as "unfair" the EU's insistence that Turkey softens its anti-terrorism laws to win visa-free travel, part of a wider deal on migration which has helped stem the flow of illegal migrants via Turkey to European shores. "Our European partners should understand us," Simsek argues.

[11] Demirtas condemns terror attacks on civilians

Turkish Hurriyet Daily News (17.06.16) reports that the co-chair of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has condemned terror acts against civilians, while calling on the Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK), an outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)-affiliated group which carried out several recent attacks, to dissolve itself.

"We've always called on this organization to stop these attacks and retract their threats of continuing and increasing their attacks," HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtas told BBC Turkish on June 16. "We never thought that an organization like this has any benefit to anybody. On the contrary, it's obvious that it's harmful," he said, when he was asked whether he wanted TAK to cease actions and dissolve itself.

"There is no party other than us which harshly criticizes and warns TAK. No other party calls on TAK to end these types of actions," he added.

Demirtas also said the party had no knowledge of any PKK attempts to restart talks with the government.

The co-chair's statements came a day after he issued a joint statement with the party's other co-chair, Figen Yuksekdag, holding the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) responsible for "destruction and suffering" and demanding an urgent end to "illegal round-the-clock curfews" in a number of southeastern Turkish provinces.
