[01] Ozgurgun: "Federation parameters have been abolished"

Turkish Cypriot daily Star Kibris newspaper (14.08.17) reports that Huseyin Ozgurgun, self-styled prime minister of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus and leader of the National Unity Party (UBP), has alleged that the parameters for finding a bi-communal bi-zonal federal solution in Cyprus have been abolished.

Addressing the congress of his party in occupied Lefka area, Ozgurgun referred to the conditions of the Turkish side for the resumption of the negotiations and claimed that the process could resume only if the Greek Cypriot side "gets its mind right" and accepts the "active and effective guarantees of the motherland, bi-zonality, the Turkish Cypriot people's unconditional equality and the equal status of the two founding states".

Ozgurgun also argued that the Turkish Cypriot "people" and the UBP will not approve an agreement which does not include the guarantees of the Turkish army and that "an agreement with those who dream of zero troops and zero guarantees can never be achieved".

[02] Albayrak: "Barbaros seismic explorations vessel is heading towards Morfou"

Under the title "We are not joking", Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (14.08.17) reports that Berat Albayrak, Turkish Minister of Energy, has said that Turkey is carrying out seismic explorations in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean and added that they have completed explorations in the Black Sea with Oruc Reis vessel and in the Mediterranean with Barbaros Hayrettin Pasa vessel.

In statements to economic editors of Turkish television channels, Albayrak said that Barbaros Hayrettin Pasa vessel is now heading towards occupied Morfou area. He claimed:

"We are not joking. We said Morfou and she is going to Morfou. Currently we are conducting our own seismic explorations. It is an important area for us. We are thinking to end the first shallow drilling this year with the drilling platform we have bought and will come by the end of the year. From next year we should wave our flag more in Turkey with the first deep drilling and in the Mediterranean with Turkey's own exploration vessels. […]"

[03] CTP accuses the "government" of "granting citizenship" contrary to the principles of equality and justice

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (12.08.17) reported that the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) has accused the UBP-DP "government" of "granting citizenship" through "decisions" by the "council of ministers" contrary to the principles of equality and justice.

In a written statement, CTP notes that the "government" jauntily continues the practice of "granting citizenship" through "decisions" of the "council of ministers" in spite of the warnings made by the party that this practice is against the "law" and violates the principles of equality and justice without showing any justification and without taking into consideration whether the people who are granted "citizenship" live in the occupied area of Cyprus or for how long they live there.

The statement argues that people living in the occupied area for more than ten years were not "granted" the "citizenship".

[04] FETO investigation in the occupied area of Cyprus is continuing

According to Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (12.08.17, the investigation regarding the four persons, who were arrested on Wednesday, regarding the operations launched in the occupied area of Cyprus for those who have links to the FETO-DYP organization [which is considered as the organizer of last year's coup in Turkey], is continuing.

The "court" "decided" to extend the detention of the four arrested persons for five more days in order for the "police" of the breakaway regime to be able to complete their investigation.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (14.08.17) reports that 15 books written by Fetullah Gulen, leader of FETO-DYP, were found in a well in occupied Famagusta yesterday afternoon. It is also reported that among the books were also religious encyclopaedias, which used to be distributed with the Turkish daily Zaman newspaper.

[05] Ozyigit: "The Turkish Cypriots may have come from Anatolia but they have a different identity"

Turkish Cypriot daily Ortam newspaper (12.08.17) reported that Cemal Ozyigit, chairman of the Social Democracy Party (TDP), has said the Turkish Cypriots' secular democratic understanding of education had suffered a very serious wound recently and noted that an example of this is the effort to close the "Ataturk Teachers' Academy", which had been educating secular and democratic teachers since 1937.

In statements during a meeting with Sener Elcil, general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Primary School Teachers' Trade Union (KTOS), Ozyigit referred to the contribution of the teachers in the "struggle" of the Turkish Cypriots and added: "The Turks of Cyprus may have come from Anatolia but they have a different identity. In time they have adopted the secular democratic principles. They have religious beliefs and traditions unique to them. No one can deny this".

In his statements, Elcil said that "the process of becoming like Arabs which has recently started regarding the content of education in Turkey is reflected onto our country". Noting that examples of this have entered into their lives, Elcil argued that the efforts to change the beliefs and the culture of the Turkish Cypriots continue and some "public institutions" have closed in the direction.
