[01] Reports for a 300-persons list with FETO involved members in the breakaway regime

Under the title: "Deep silence", Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (04.09.17) reports that there was not any "official confirmation" regarding a list consisting of 300 persons, including various businessmen and 53 "policemen" who are appeared to be linked with the terrorist FETO organization.

The paper notes that neither the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, nor "prime minister" Huseyin Ozgurgun made any statements regarding the issue. The paper writes that during the 16th Musiad Expo Fair (Turkish Islamic Businessmen Association) held last November, Ozgurgun stated that the breakaway regime considers FETO to be a terrorist organization and forbids all its activities.

Reporting on the same issue Kibris (02.09.17) reported that it is not clearwhether the "police" will conduct the arrests of the businessmen and other "policemen" or civilians that are included in the 300-persons list at the same time. The paper notes that these persons used the Bylock cryptographic system which was used by the FETO members for communication. The paper also wrote that the "police" did not reply to calls by the "attorney general" to seize three "high ranking police officials" from their post.

Afrika (02.09.17) reported on the same issue noting that many Turkish Cypriot businessmen are terrified that their names are included in the FETO members list and that they may be arrested and adds that some persons are taking advantage of this fear and try to get money from the businessmen promising them to remove their name from the list. Noting that in Turkey every opponent of Erdogan is put in jail accused that is member of FETO, Afrika notes that the "attorney general" should not allow similar actions to take place in the breakaway regime.

[08] Cavusoglu responded to Berlin over arrested Germans

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (03.09.17) reported that Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on September 2 dismissed Berlin's reaction to the arrest of German citizens in Turkey, a row which is worsening the nations' already fraying ties.

"When we arrest [a coup plotter] Germany starts to get upset. But what are we supposed to do?" Cavusoglu said.

"This is also a Turkish citizen but it [Germany] asks 'why are you arresting my citizen?'" he added.

Berlin on September 1 said that two more German nationals had been held in Turkey "for political reasons," as Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Ankara that Germany could re-examine its policies following the latest Turkish action.

The latest arrests brings to 12 the total number of Germans in Turkish custody that Berlin considers political prisoners.

There is "no legal basis" for detention in most of these cases, Merkel said, according to remarks carried by Germany's DPA news agency.

Merkel said that she did not think it was appropriate to carry out further discussions with Ankara about its participation in a European Union customs union. "We must react decisively," Merkel told a business event in the southern city of Nuremberg, noting that Germany had already fundamentally revamped its relations with Ankara. "Given the latest events, perhaps it is necessary to rethink them ever further."

Social Democrat Martin Schulz, Merkel's main challenger in Sept. 24 elections, and other German politicians urged Berlin to issue a formal travel warning for Germans heading to Turkey.

According to Dogan News Agency, the two German nationals most recently arrested are of Turkish origin and were detained at Antalya airport in southern Turkey over suspected links with last year's failed coup.

"If it's someone connected to the failed coup, if they supported it, then why are you protecting them?" Cavusoglu asked, speaking in Antalya at celebrations for the major Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

Relations between the two NATO allies have deteriorated sharply since Berlin sharply criticized Ankara over the crackdown that followed last year's failed coup.

The arrest of several German nationals, including the Turkish-German journalist Deniz Yucel, the Istanbul correspondent for Die Welt daily, further frayed ties.

Yucel has now spent some 200 days in Turkish custody ahead of a trial on terror charges. TURKISH AFFAIRS SECTION
