[01] Akinci says that if necessary they will hold a referendum for the "people" to vote the solution they want in Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (30.10.17) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has said that no one consulted with him before the "proposal" of 19 "deputies" providing for the abolition of federation as solution to the Cyprus problem to be submitted to the "assembly". In statements at illegal Tymbou airport upon his departure to Turkey for delivering a lecture at Yeditepe University, Akinci noted that the Cyprus problem is an issue which has always been carried out by the "presidency" and that the proposals which passed from the "assembly" on this issue have always been discussed with the "presidency" beforehand.

"No one asked for our view on this issue. [?] At such an important junction, it is not an appropriate behavior to ask for a proposal which includes such a radical view to pass from the assembly without consulting with the presidency", he claimed and added: "The important thing is whether the proposals could find a field of implementation. In my view, this kind of approaches will not be helpful for the future of Cyprus".

Noting that the process from now on will be important and that he will carry it out in consultation with the "assembly", the parties in the "assembly", the civil organizations and Turkey, Akinci argued: "And most importantly, we will carry it out in cooperation with the source from which we have taken the power, that is, with our people. When necessary, when the conditions are appropriate, we can go to the people, of course. The developments will show this. If necessary, the people might be asked with a referendum as regards what they want, what they wish, but all these depend on the developments, on the conditions. The process which we are experiencing requires from us to behave calmly, without a rush".

[02] Kanbay argues that they are holding evaluations to shape the essence of the solution they want in Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (29.10.17) reported that Derya Kanbay, Turkish self-styled ambassador to the occupied part of Nicosia, has alleged that Turkey in coordination with the Turkish Cypriot "people" and their "state" preserves the target of achieving a just, lasting and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem through negotiations. In an address to the "nation" through illegal Bayrak television on the occasion of Turkey's national day of 29 October, Kanbay argued that the views regarding the essence of this solution will be shaped according to the ongoing coordination they are holding. Ha claimed: "Within this framework, we will continue providing our support in every field to the Turkish Cypriot people [?] for living in full security and peace on this island in which they have equal rights. We are expecting from the international community to, the soonest, take steps which will lift the restrictions and isolation implemented on the Turkish Cypriot people in every field of life".

Arguing that the "TRNC" should obtain a "strong economic structure", Kanbay alleged that within this framework small, medium-sized and big projects as well as reforms should be materialized. He claimed that these are matters which fall in the "duties and responsibilities" of the "TRNC government" and added that their common target if for the infrastructure in the occupied area to reach the highest level, by continuing their big projects in all fields, such as in energy and transport.

Arguing that the Cyprus problem passed through "important milestones" this year, Kanbay alleged that in spite of all good will efforts of the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey, the "intransigent stance" of the Greek Cypriot-Greece duo has not changed in the negotiating process which recommenced in 2008 and the conference held in July in Switzerland gave no result.

Noting that Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots continue their evaluations as regards the forthcoming period, Kanbay alleged: "However, it should be asked what kind of a solution could be found with the Greek Cypriots, who do not want to share the rights which they have usurped, do not digest equality and try to present the Turkish Cypriots as any minority in the EU".

Referring to Turkey's foreign policy, Kanbay alleged that they follow a policy in the direction of Kemal Atarurk's principle that says "peace at home, peace in the world". He claimed that in this direction Turkey has a vision focused on peace and based principles adding that the full membership in the EU continues to be their strategic target.

[03] Lord Maginnis tabled a question to the British Foreign Office regarding the British High Commissioner in Cyprus' statements for the non-recognition of the "TRNC"

Turkish Cypriot daily Cyprus Today newspaper (28.10.17) reported that Northern Irish peer Lord Maginnis tabled a question to the British Foreign Office regarding the British High Commissioner in Cyprus Mathew Kidd who speaking at a meeting in occupied Lapithos stated that "An internationally recognized TRNC will be very vulnerable because it would be the smallest country in the EU and because its ability to defend itself would be very very limited".

According to the paper, Kidd's statements "drew the ire of Lord Maginnis" who in a written question submitted to the British Ministry demands to know "if Kidd was speaking directly on FCO instructions" and if his remarks indicated that "the identity of the Turkish Cypriots is being repudiated" by the UK government. "If not, what disciplinary actions does the FCO intend to take?", Lord Maginnis asked.

[04] Union of Turkish Cypriots who live abroad condemned Kidd's statements

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibrisli newspaper (30.10.17) reports that the Union of Turkish Cypriot who live abroad (ATCA) called on the "government" of the breakaway regime to grand them the right to "vote", adding that they could be "represented" in the "assembly' with two or three "deputies".

ATCA's representative in the breakaway regime Kerem Hasan also condemned the recent statements of the British High Commissioner in Cyprus Mathew Kidd who stated that "it will be dangerous if the TRNC is recognized". Hasan stated that they took action in order to find out if these statements represent the position of the British Foreign Office and added that the issue will be brought in front of the House of Lords. "The island of Cyprus has two owners; two people who are politically equal and have the right of self-determination", Hasan claimed.

[05] TDP condemned the proposal of the 19 "deputies" as unacceptable

Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (29.1017) reports that the Social Democracy Party (TDP) described the "proposal" submitted to the "assembly" by 19 "deputies" for the abolition of federation as a solution model to the Cyprus talks as unacceptable.

In a written statement, TDP announced that the sides, which presented the joint declaration of February 11 2014, considering that the "current situation in Cyprus is unacceptable" and that there is a need for a mutual acceptable political solution, they should continue their vision with determination towards a federal solution with a single sovereignty, single citizenship and a single international personality based on the bi-zonal, bi-communal political equality.

The statement also read that the parameters regarding the Cyprus problem cannot be changed unilaterally neither by the Turkish Cypriot side nor the Greek Cypriot side.

[06] Turkey's MFA: Turkey supports Spain's efforts for its territorial integrity

Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on October 27 2017 (http://www.mfa.gov.tr/no-333-ispanyada-katalunya-ozerk-bolgesiyle-ilgili-gelismeler-hken.en.mfa) the following press release regarding the developments in the region of Catalonia in Spain:

"We are closely following the developments in the region of Catalonia in Spain.

This afternoon's decision of the Parliament of the Regional Government of Catalonia concerning the declaration of independence is not a step in the right direction. Respect for the territorial integrity and the Constitution of Spain as well as the will of Spanish people are fundamental. The unilateral decision of the Parliament does not comply with the Constitution and the laws of Spain and does not reflect the will of Spain as well as the people of this region.

We hope that the Regional Government of Catalonia will not insist on this unilateral decision, which has no constitutional legitimacy and could lead to tension and escalation. We believe that this issue will be resolved based on democracy and the rule of law.

Turkey has no doubt that Spain, with whom Turkey has bonds of friendship and alliance, will overcome this challenge. Turkey supports Spain's efforts in this aspect."

    [07] Denktas hails Catalan UDI

According to illegal Bayrak television (online, 28.10.17), self-styled deputy prime minister Serdar Denktas has hailed Catalonia's unilateral declaration of independence from Spain.

In a message posted on social media, Denktas claimed that the Turkish Cypriot "people" just like the Catalans too have a right for self-determination and added: "The world will accept this sooner or later".

Claiming that it was no longer possible to silence the voices of peoples around the world seeking to rule and administer themselves, Denktas criticized the EU's announcement that Madrid remains its only interlocutor and that it will not recognize "Catalan independence".

[08] Turkish Family Minister paid an illegal visit to the "TRNC"

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (28.10.17) reported that Turkish Minister of Family and Social Services Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya paid an illegal visit in the breakaway regime and held meetings with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Ak?nc?, the "speaker" of the "assembly" Sibel Siber and "prime minister" Huseyin Ozgurgun.

She also held a meeting with the so-called minister of labor Ersan Saner and they "signed" a "memorandum of understanding"

Speaking during the meeting the Turkish Minister stated that the "memorandum" is small but an important step for the "national cause" and stated that the aim is the "TRNC" to be further developed further in the fields of education, health and economy.

Commenting on the issue, Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (28.10.17) reported that the turbaned Turkish Minister, who covers her head the way the women in Saudi Arabia cover their head, visited the "TRNC".

[12] Erdogan and Putin discussed the latest developments about Syria's Idlib over phone

According to Turkish daily Sabah newspaper (29.10.17), President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a phone call late Saturday with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to discuss the latest developments about Syria's Idlib.

Addressing the upcoming Astana talks, Erdogan and Putin stressed the importance of maintaining close contact and coordinated action regarding the Syrian conflict.

According to presidential sources, the two leaders also discussed bilateral relations between Turkey and Russia. Erdogan and Putin touched upon the significance of cooperation in the energy sector, agreeing on the need to take necessary steps to foster bilateral trade between the two countries.

Sources also said that the Russian President congratulated Erdogan and the Turkish people on the 94th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey.

Moreover, Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (online, 29.10.17) reported that according to a Turkish presidential source, Erdogan and Putin also discussed energy cooperation between Russia and Turkey, including the Akkuyu nuclear power plant and the Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline project, the source said.

[13] Commentary: "Can Turkey's Good Party capture attention?"

Columnist Sedat Ergin, writing in Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (online, 30.10.17) with the above title wonders whether the new emerged political party "The Good Party" should be taken into account or not in the following commentary:

"(?) The main body of the Good Party comes from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) but it also incorporates names from the centre right and centre left, even including some who have left the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). It almost resembles the model that Turgut Ozal applied when he brought together different existing political tendencies in his establishment of the Motherland Party (ANAP) in 1982.

The first test facing the Good Party is whether it can turn all of its tendencies into a coherent political identity. It can either develop according to dominant MHP structure or open itself to a new track by trying to bring its many different tendencies together.

If it tends toward the second choice, another critical question arises: Can this party capture the attraction of the public from different political tendencies?

Let's admit it: the Good Party came into being as a result of the power struggle among opponents inside the MHP against the leadership of Devlet Bahceli. Therefore, its primary target group will be those who are not pleased with the political support that today's MHP gives to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

But the party's chance of playing a 'regulatory role' in politics by relying only on disgruntled MHP voters is very low. To grow her party, Aksener needs to gather support from other political streams.

    (?)

At the top of the list of political actors who will perceive the Good Party as a threat ? probably even ahead of the MHP - comes President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is aiming to win the presidential elections in 2019 by winning more than 50% of the votes in the first round.

The political success of Erdogan over the last 15 years comes from his ability to keep a significant number of right-wing voters with him, consolidating them within the AKP.

Erdogan has never hesitated to create alliances with political formations, small or large, in his bid to attract as many right-wing votes as possible. So it is not difficult to guess that Erdogan will not welcome warmly a new player who also has eyes on right-wing votes. (?)"

[14] Turkish journalists march for jailed colleagues ahead of trial

According to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (online, 29.10.17), around 200 people marched in Istanbul on Oct. 28 in solidarity with the many jailed journalists across Turkey.

The march saw the participation of a number of MPs such as Baris Yarkadas, Ali Seker and Onursal Adiguzel from the main opposition Republican People's Party's (CHP) as well and Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) deputy group chair and Istanbul lawmaker Filiz Kerestecioglu who joined the march, along with journalists and families of currently arrested journalists.

The group chanted slogans including "Justice right now, freedom right now," "Don't be afraid to shout: Free press is a right," and "Ahmet [S?k] will come out [of prison] and write again," referring to the jailed daily Cumhuriyet reporter.

Journalist Gulsah Karadag read out a statement on behalf of the group. "We are here side by side. Every step that we take is for our friends who are in jail due to their opinions, supporting their patience and their will. None of us can be free as long as dozens of journalists are jailed. The jailing of journalists conceals the truth and prevents lies from being revealed. It tramples rights, law and justice", Karadag said.

The march came three days before the fourth hearing into the critical Turkish daily Cumhuriyet, which will be held at Istanbul's ourthouse on Oct. 31.

In the last hearing on Sept. 25, the court ordered the release of prominent journalist Kadri Gursel but ruled for the continued arrest of four others, including reporter Ahmet Sik and editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu.

Meanwhile, German journalist Gunter Wallraff will also come to Turkey to follow the hearing and meet with human rights activists as well as the lawyer for arrested Die Welt reporter Deniz Yucel and his wife, Deutsche Welle has reported.

Seventeen Cumhuriyet staff members have been accused in the case on terrorism charges, with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), and the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO) among the groups named in the indictments.

According to the Turkish Journalists' Association, around 160 journalists are currently in jail in the country.
