[02] Commission will examine more closely the Deutsche Post / trans-o-flex merger case

The European Commission has decided to open an in-depth enquiry into the proposed acquisition by Deutsche Post AG of the shares held by Industrial Information GmbH in the high-speed delivery service trans-o-flex Schnell- lieferdienst GmbH. The Commission has serious doubts about the compatibility of this project with the common market, since the investigations indicate that trans-o-flex is also to some extent active on markets where Deutsche Post already has substantial market shares. The enquiry has to be completed within four months.

[04] Commission at the "Internationale Tourismus Börse" in Berlin

At the "Internationale Tourismus Börse" (ITB), which takes place in Berlin from 6 to 10 March 1999, the European Commission will have the opportunity to highlight some of the main European Union (EU) measures contributing to the development of tourism in Europe. In particular, there will be a practical demonstration of EU instruments in relation to employment and technology. The first of such instruments is "Eures" (EURopean Employment Services), the labour market network, which includes a specific section on tourism, aiming at facilitating the mobility of workers in the European Economic Area. The second is the "InTouriSME" project which allows European tourism enterprises and tourist destinations to promote through Internet on a world wide scale their products and services. The Commission is holding also in Berlin a special meeting of the Tourism Advisory Committee at the level of Directors General responsible for tourism in EU and EFTA countries. This will be the occasion for examining the contribution of tourism to the European Employment strategy and the conditions for boosting cooperation among Member States in the field of tourism.
