[02] Commission clears the acquisition of Omnigraph by Man Roland

The European Commission has authorised an operation whereby Man Roland Druckmaschinen AG (Man Roland), acquires sole control of its distributor, Omnigraph Group N.V. (Omnigraph). Man Roland, part of the Man Group, is a manufacturer of web-fed offset and sheet-fed offset printing machines and related products. Omnigraph is the exclusive distributor of Man Roland for printing presses in certain Member States. Following the present transaction Omnigraph will be a wholly owned and controlled subsidiary of Man Roland, its main shareholder prior to the transaction. The operation involves a change from joint to sole control of Omnigraph and does not create or strengthen a dominant position.

[04] Optimism regarding the creation of a Single Market for electricity and natural gas

The European Commission adopted the second report to the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament on the state of liberalisation of the energy markets according to which there is every reason to be optimistic regarding the creation of a Single Market in the European Union for electricity and natural gas. In the future the correct implementation of the Gas Directive by Member States and monitoring the operation of the Electricity Directive in practice will be in the top priorities of the Commission.

[05] Business and Consumer surveys for April 1999 : improved industrial confidence compensates for less optimism among consumers

(! embargo 12h !) The latest results from the business and consumer surveys conducted by the European Commission's Directorate General for economic and financial affairs are published today. Improved sentiment in industry offset by subdued outlook among consumers allowed the economic sentiment indicator to increase slightly in the euro-zone in April 1999, whereas it remained unchanged for the European Union (EU) as a whole. According to the latest business and consumer survey, industrialists were of the opinion that their situation had improved compared to last month. This can be largely attributed to their more favourable views on both order books and production expectations. The rate of capacity utilisation in manufacturing industry remained unchanged in the euro-zone and in the EU compared to January this year. These results suggest that the downward trend, observed since October 1998, may have come to an end. By contrast, consumers were less positive in April. The consumer confidence indicator slightly decreased which was mainly due to rather gloomy consumer expectations with regards to the general economic situation. Consumers also had a less optimistic opinion concerning the development of unemployment in the near future compared to last month.

[06] Le chômage dans la zone euro stable à 10,4% en mars 1999

(! embargo 12h !)
