  • [01] The Balearic Islands declared free of bluetongue

The European Commission has adopted a decision to recognise the Balearic Islands (Spain) as free of bluetongue. As a result of this, the export of live animals and their semen, embryos and ova of species susceptible to bluetongue (sheep, goats, cattle and wild ruminants) from the these islands to other Member States and to third countries can restart after a ban lasting more than two years (since November 2000). Restrictions remain in place in other mediterranean areas of the European Union (Greece, Corsica and some areas in Italy). Bluetongue is a fast-spreading viral disease of domestic and wild ruminants transmitted by insects. It is not known to affect humans. For more information on this disease see on the internet at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/food/fs/ah_pcad/ah_pcad_index_en.html

[02] Commission clears the way for temporary admission of horses participating in the Equestrian Pre-Olympic Test Events in Greece

In August this year the Equestrian Pre-Olympic Test Events will be held in Athens, Greece. This sporting event, organised to prepare for the Olympic Games next year, will bring together exceptional horses and riders for world class competition. Confident in the veterinary supervision by the competent authorities and the organising body, Federation Equestre International (FEI), the Commission has decided to authorise for this particular event specific animal health conditions for the temporary admission of registered horses. In particular, testing for equine viral arteritis (EVA) will not be required for stallions participating in these events, provided they are not used for breeding during their stay and leave the EU after the competitions have finished. EVA is a transmissible virus disease spread predominantly through semen and potentially causing flu like symptoms and abortions in pregnant mares.

[04] Commission adopts four new humanitarian aid decisions worth almost €4.7 million

The European Commission has recently taken humanitarian decisions concerning Angolan refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo (€1.1 million), Mexico (€1 million), Yemen (€1.6 million) and Sudan (€1 million). The assistance is channelled through the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), which comes under the authority of Commissioner Poul Nielson.
