  • [01] Commission invites comments on regulation of liberal professions and its effects

The public would gain if lawyers, architects and other liberal professions were less regulated, according to an independent study carried out for the European Commission. Regulation of professional services varies greatly from one EU country to another particularly with regard to prices, advertising and inter-professional collaboration. In a speech today to the German Federal Bar Association, Competition Commissioner Mario Monti invited regulators and practitioners to reflect on whether some of the restrictions which retrace their origin in the medieval guilds are still needed in the modern world and might not have adverse effects for businesses, which are active users of professional services, and consumers alike.

[03] Racism and Xenophobia : Anna Diamantopoulou supports call for "a culture of healing"

Speaking following a European Round Table on anti-Semitism and Islamophobia on 20 March, European Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou commented on the dangers of the conflict in the Gulf for communities in Europe. "We saw during the last Gulf War a dramatic increase in attacks on Muslims and people of Arab origin. And more recently, we have witnessed violent anti-Semitism as a reaction to tensions in Israel and Palestine. We must do everything we can to avoid a repetition of those excesses in response to the new conflict in the Gulf."

[04] Water for Life : Europe Day at the World Water Forum

The third World Water Forum in Kyoto, Japan, convened from March 16th to March 23rd, 2003, offers a unique platform for 10,000 participants to exchange their ideas and experiences, and discuss the global water crisis. Building on the 2002 EU Water Initiative launched at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the European Commission will reinforce the EU's commitment to cutting by half the number of people living without drinking water and basic sanitation. During special sessions today at Europe Day in Kyoto delegates have the opportunity to learn about a series of issues relating to sustainable management of water resources as well as the EU's achievements in international scientific and technological development cooperation on issues relating to water, on a global scale. The events offer an opportunity to hear about progress in implementing the Water Initiative, to discuss with partner regions (Africa, Newly Independent States (NIS) and Mediterranean) and explore research, innovation and further development of EU action programmes.
