  • [I] Résultats de la Commission de ce jour - Outcome of today's Commission meeting

[01] Commission sets a positive agenda for the 2005 review of the Sustainable Development Strategy

With the adoption today of the orientations for the review of the Sustainable Development Strategy European Commission President José Manuel Barroso sets a positive agenda for sustainable development. "The challenges faced by our planet today are global. Europe takes its responsibility. Without clear political leadership and commitment to change, our children and grandchildren will not be able to enjoy the prosperity and quality of life we have today. Climate change is accelerating, we are putting increasing pressure on our natural resources, biodiversity is at stake and narrowing the wealth gap between North and South remains an enormous challenge. If we want to preserve the delicate balance between economic, social and environmental concerns needed for a sustainable society, we must take action now."

[04] Commission recommends further steps under the excessive deficit procedure for Greece

The European Commission has recommended to the European Union Finance Ministers Council to give notice to Greece, in accordance with Article 104(9) of the Treaty, to take the necessary measures to remedy its excessive deficit situation. Given the sizeable adjustment to be carried out, the Commission recommends extending by one year to the end of 2006 at the latest the deadline for bringing the deficit below the 3.0% reference value. The Greek authorities are expected to present a report, before March 21, detailing the measures needed to comply with this recommendation, which is expected to be adopted by the Council at its next meeting on 17 February 2005.

[II] Other news - Autres nouvelles

[05] European Commission President José Manuel Barroso's statement on the Middle East declaration

"I strongly welcome the truce declared yesterday by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. It is my sincerest hope that this will lead to a definitive end to years of violence in the Middle East and put us back on the path towards a lasting peace between two states - Israel and a viable, democratic Palestinian state - living side by side in peace and security in the framework of a comprehensive settlement in the Middle East, as laid out in the Roadmap. I urge Israelis and the Palestinians to pursue this goal with determination. As Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner has indicated, the European Commission stands ready to support the next steps with concrete help worth €250 million."

[08] Benita Ferrero-Waldner announces €250 million support to the Palestinians in 2005

Following her visit to the Middle East 6-8 February, and the Ceasefire Declaration made by the Israelis and Palestinians at Sharm el Sheikh, the Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner has announced the European Commission expects to make around €250 million available in 2005 to support further steps towards the creation of a viable Palestinian state. Part of this allocation may used to help rebuild shattered infrastructure.

    [09] Peter Mandelson in Washington D.C. (09-10/02)

European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson today begins a two-day visit to the United States. Mr Mandelson will meet with US Secretary of the Treasury John Snow, Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick and Congressional and Senate leaders. On Friday he will give a speech to the US Chamber of Commerce on transatlantic relations.

[10] László Kovács in London (10/02)

Tomorrow, 10 February, in London, European Taxation and Customs Commissioner László Kovács will meet the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Mr Gordon Brown, the Paymaster General Ms Dawn Primarolo and the Economic Secretary to the Treasury Mr John Healey, to discuss a range of EU tax issues in the light of the forthcoming UK Presidency.
