[01] Markos Kyprianou visits USA to discuss obesity, pandemic preparedness
and GMOs
Markos Kyprianou, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection,
will visit the United States from 17-21 April. He will use the trip to
discuss a broad range of issues with his US counterparts including obesity,
trans-Atlantic cooperation on tackling pandemics and co-operation with the
new European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). GMOs will
also be discussed, in light of the recent announcement that the
unauthorised GMO maize Bt10 has been inadvertently released onto the US
market and subsequently exported to the EU.
[02] Olli Rehn to visit Belgrade and Podgorica (18-19/04)
A few days after the European Commission approved a Feasibility Report
confirming that sufficient progress has been reached to open negotiations
on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) for Serbia and
Montenegro, Commissioner for Enlargement, Olli Rehn, will visit Belgrade
and Podgorica from 18 to 19 April 2005. During his time there, the
Commissioner will welcome the progress that has been made so far and will
encourage Serbia and Montenegro to continue this trend in both the
political and economic fields. He will reiterate to the authorities that
sustained improvements in cooperation with the UN-based International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) are thecornerstone for
progress along the road to Europe.
[04] Commission sets up new advisory "Group of Political Analysis" with
leading political scientists and researchers
The European Commission has set up a new external advisory "Group of
Political Analysis" (GPA) - with leading political scientists and
researchers - which will meet today in Brussels for the first time. The
group is one of three external advisory groups - involving experts from the
fields of Economics, Politics and Social Science - being set up by the
Commission. The overall objective is to stimulate an ongoing dialogue
between the European Commission and European experts from academia,
business and civil society and to provide President Barroso and
Commissioners with objective, expert and impartial advice in the
formulation of recommendations on policies of the European Union.
[05] Meeting of the selection panel for the European Capitals of Culture
2009
The selection panel for the European Capitals of Culture 2009 met yesterday
in Brussels. Two proposals had been submitted to the European institutions
in December 2004 : Linz and Vilnius. Austria and Lithuania were the only
Member States entitled to make proposals for 2009 in accordance with
Decision 1419/1999/EC which lays down the process of designating the
European Capitals of Culture (starting in 2009, two Member States per year
will host a European Capital of Culture). During the meeting, the
Delegations from both candidate cities presented the planned activities for
the year to the panel composed of six experts, appointed by the European
Institutions. At the end of the meeting, the Chairman, Charles Hennessy,
explained his satisfaction with the quality of the presentations made by
the cities. He encouraged the candidate cities to further emphasize their
specific assets in the elaboration of their programmes. The panel is
expected to issue shortly a formal report with recommendations to the EU
institutions. The Council will designate the European Capitals of Culture
for 2009 in September.
