  • [01] José Manuel Barroso to appeal, with Bono, to put the EU on track to double development aid

European Commission President Barroso today meets Bono, lead singer for U2 and a key campaigner on Africa, in the Commission's headquarters, in Brussels. The aim is to appeal to EU leaders at the summit in Brussels the following week, to put their full political weight behind ambitious new development aid targets which would put the EU on track to double development aid in a decade (by 2015). The agreement on aid is a crucial part of the build up to the G8 summit in Scotland in July, which President Barroso will attend, and the review of the UN's Millenium Development Goals in September.

[03] Commission welcomes adoption of European Parliament report on future EU financing

The European Commission has welcomed the vote on 8 June by the European Parliament on the Financial Framework 2007-13. By approving the report by Reimer Böge MEP, the Parliament has demonstrated a responsible attitude toward the Union's finances. The report will form the basis of Parliament's position in the coming negotiations on an Inter-Institutional Agreement, held between the EU’s three main institutions, which will fix the Financial Framework.

[04] Commission approves research and environmental aid of € 5.7 million to Solvay Soda in Germany

The European Commission has authorised, under the EU State aid rules, subsidies to Solvay Soda GmbH (SSD) in Germany, a subsidiary of sodium carbonate producer Solvay Soda Deutschland GmbH. To reduce pollution of the river Rhine, SSD presented an environmental project to produce sodium carbonate using a raw material that pollutes less and an associated research plan. SSD is due to receive a total of €5.7 million in aid from the German authorities for the project, which will cost a total of €29.6 million. The Commission has concluded that the subsidies were not likely to cause undue distortion of competition within the Single Market and were therefore compatible with EC Treaty state aid rules (Article 87).

[06] Why Europe needs research spending

On 6 April 2005 the European Commission made a proposal for a spending programme for research and development from 2007 to 2013. This programme, in line with the Commission's proposal on the overall budget for this period, envisages a doubling of EU funds for research and development. This reflects the EU's political priority for growth and jobs. The Commission's proposal is backed up by an impact assessment study which examines the link between research investment and increased competitiveness. The present background note highlights some of the findings of the impact assessment. It identifies the strong and positive impact that research and development in general, and the European Framework Programme in particular, has on the European economy. It describes the added value of working together at European level and the effect on job creation within the EU.

[07] Peter Mandelson to visit China for further talks on textiles

European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson will arrive in Shanghai on 10 June. During his visit, the Commissioner will meet his Chinese counterpart, Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai, to discuss Chinese textiles imports to the EU.

[09] Commission urges compromise to resolve the Ethiopian crisis

European Commissioner responsible for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, spoke with the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi in order to convey a message to the government of Ethiopia urging tolerance and restraint on the use of force in response to recent unrest following disagreements over the electoral process.
