  • [01] EU welcomes repeal of US tax breaks to US exporters, will withdraw reintroduction of sanctions

The European Union has today warmly welcomed the repeal by the US Congress of WTO-incompatible tax breaks for US companies contained in the Jobs Act. The US has today repealed the tax benefits as part of wider tax legislation. The EU welcomes the constructive work of the USTR’s office and Chairman Bill Thomas and Chairman Charles Grassley in removing the measures from US law.

[02] European Commission clarifies rules for maritime public service links to small islands

The Commission modified its policy on maritime public service links to and between small islands. European rules apply to the selection of public service operators to and between small islands. The Commission clarified today that public authorities can choose a simplified procedure in order to select the service provider. Such simplified procedure can apply if the maritime service involves less than 300 000 passengers per year. The previous threshold for applying the simplified procedure was 100 000 passengers.

[03] Reform of European air traffic control takes shape

The European Commission has adopted the Airspace Classification Regulation, thus marking another step towards the realisation of the Single European Sky. Together with two other recently adopted Regulations relating to the Single European Sky, the recently published Directive on a Community air traffic controller licence, the launch of the SESAR programme to modernise air traffic management systems and the extension of the tasks of the European Aviation Safety Agency, the Regulation represents a concrete contribution to increased safety in aviation and in transcending national borders in European air traffic management.

[05] 15 May 2006: International Day of Families- The family in the EU25 seen through figure
