  • [01] The ten best European rural tourist destinations

Vice President Günter Verheugen awarded the "European Destinations of Excellence" (EDEN) to the ten best emerging rural destinations at the European Annual Tourism Forum in Portugal on 26th of October. The aim of EDEN is twofold: to draw attention to the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations and to promote destinations where commercial success goes hand in hand with social, cultural and environmental sustainability. It also creates awareness of Europe’s tourist diversity and quality, besides promoting Europe as the foremost tourism destination in the world.

[02] Danuta Hübner in Sicily to get new cohesion policy under way

Danuta Hübner, Commissioner for regional policy, is in Sicily on 29 and 30 October to discuss the development strategy chosen by the region to implement cohesion policy in 2007-2013 and to assess what has been accomplished in 2000-2006. During her visit, she will meet Mr Salvatore Cuffaro, president of the region, and other members of the Sicilian government and regional parliament, as well as representatives of civil society. The new regional operational programme agreed for Sicily represents EU investment of € 3.27 billion over seven years.

[03] Joe Borg in Lisbon to address ministerial conference on eradicating illegal fishing

How the EU could make a crucial contribution to eliminating illegal fishing is the theme of today's keynote address by European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Joe Borg, at the high level conference on eradicating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Lisbon. The Conference is hosted jointly by the Commission and the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union. It brings together EU Fisheries Ministers and Representatives with their counterparts from many of the most important EU's international fisheries partners from the North Atlantic and the Africa continent to discuss how to combat international trade in IUU fisheries products. This initiative follows on from the proposed Regulation and Communication on IUU fishing tabled by the Commission on 17 October (See IP/07/1507). The day's proceedings will end with the adoption of a ministerial declaration on eradicating IUU fishing.

[04] The cultural economy and cultural activities in the EU27

Culture plays a significant role in the daily life of European citizens. With nearly 300 cultural sites out of almost 700 on the UNESCO list, the 27 Member States of the European Union possess a significant cultural heritage. The importance of culture today is shown by the fact that cultural employment accounted for almost five million people, 2.4% of total employment in the EU27 in 2005. For the first time, Eurostat has gathered the main available culture statistics comparable at a European level in a single publication ("Cultural statistics") which includes chapters on cultural employment, enterprises and external trade as well as cultural expenditure and participation.

[05] Commissioner Piebalgs visits state-of-the-art renewable facilities in Germany

Commissioner Andris Piebalgs will today visit a range of renewable energy installations in the "Energy Cluster Lubmin" in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Commissioner will be accompanied by the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Dr Harald Ringstorff. The visit takes place as the Commission is preparing a package of proposals on renewable energy and climate change for adoption in January. The package will include a Directive ensuring that 20% of the EU's energy needs will be met from renewable sources by 2020.

[06] Investment services: entry into force of MiFID a boon for financial markets and investor protection

On 1 November 2007, the Markets in Financial Services Directive will enter into force. The European Commission looks forward to the onset of this landmark law, which will play a central role in creating a robust, common regulatory framework for Europe's securities markets. MiFID will increase competition among exchanges, multilateral trading facilities (MTFs) and investment firms, giving them a "single passport" to operate throughout the EU on the basis of authorisation in their home Member State. Investors will not only have access to a greater number of trading venues, but also a more robust and comprehensive framework ensuring high levels of investor protection. Significant market developments are already underway in anticipation of this new, more competitive environment.
