  • [01] President Barroso at the G8 summit in Japan (7-9 July 2008): leadership to address pressing global challenges

For the fourth time, President Barroso will represent the Commission as full member of the G8 summit, which this year takes place under Japanese Presidency at Toyako (Hokkaido, Japan). This year, G8 leaders will notably address climate change, development, the world economy and rising food and energy prices. At the summit, they will push for a coordinated international response to these challenges.

[02] Mergers: Commission clears proposed acquisition of Tinfos by Eramet

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of Tinfos A/S Metal Business of Norway by Eramet SA of France. The Commission’s investigation has found that the proposed transaction would not impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.

[03] Mergers: Commission refers proposed acquisition of Plus Discount by REWE to Czech Competition Authority

Following a request from the Czech Competition Authority under the EU's Merger Regulation, the European Commission has decided to refer the assessment of the acquisition of the Czech retailer Plus Discount by REWE of Germany to the Czech Competition Authority. The Commission concluded that the proposed concentration would only affect competition in the Czech Republic and that the Czech authority would therefore be best placed to investigate its potential impact.

[04] Transparency in Cohesion Policy: Published beneficiary lists to raise awareness, enhance quality of EU investment

DG Regional Policy has launched a website indicating regions that have published lists of beneficiaries, as they are required to do in line with new communication requirements for Cohesion Policy over the 2007-2013 programming period. This is part of a Commission initiative to improve transparency over the EU budget and the impact of investment.

[05] Rail transport: new agreement to accelerate deployment of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS)

The European Commission and the rail industry (manufacturers, infrastructure managers and undertakings) today signed a memorandum of understanding in Rome aimed at accelerating deployment of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERMTS) throughout Europe. Deployment of ERTMS, which is equally suited to high-speed and conventional railway lines, will enable trains to carry a single signalling system on board. This new European concept will reduce operating costs and enhance the efficiency of the system.

[06] Agreement reached to liberalise trade in Agricultural and Fishery Products between the European Union and the Arab Republic of EgyptA preliminary agreement has been reached by negotiators to further liberalise trade in agricultural, processed agricultural and fish and fishery products between the European Union and the Arab Republic of Egypt.
