[01] EU population projections 2008-2060: deaths to outnumber births from 2015

The European Union population is projected to increase from 495 million on 1 January 2008 to 521 million in 2035, and thereafter gradually decline to 506 million in 2060. The annual number of births is projected to fall over the period 2008-2060, while the annual number of deaths is projected to continue rising. From 2015 onwards deaths would outnumber births, meaning the EU population would no longer increase naturally and positive net migration would be the only population growth factor. However, from 2035 even this positive net migration would no longer counterbalance the negative natural change, and the population is projected to begin to fall. These population projections for the period 2008-2060 come from a report issued by Eurostat. Population projections are what-if scenarios that aim to provide information about the likely future size and structure of the population, and should therefore be considered with caution.

[02] Commission clears acquisition of Baskent by Sabanci and Verbund

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Bașkent Elektrik Daģıtım (Baskent) of Turkey by H.Ö. Sabanci Holding A.S. (Sabanci) of Turkey and Österreichische Elektrizitätswirtschafts-Aktiengesellschaft (Verbund) of Austria. Sabanci is a Turkish industrial and financial conglomerate. Verbund is active in the generation and transmission of electricity. Baskent distributes and sells electricity in Turkey. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[03] CAP: Call for tender for a study on modelling of feed consumption in the EU

The European Commission has launched a call for tender for a study on modelling of feed consumption in the European Union. The aim of the study is to analyse the feed consumption in the EU, and, based on this analysis, to develop a quantitative model to estimate the annual demand for feed concentrates in the European Union, by Member State, category of animals, physiological stage, livestock production system and feeding system. The model will also take into account the prices and the availability of the different feed concentrates and the raw materials used to produce them. The maximum budget attributed to this project is € 299 999. The deadline for submitting offers expires on 12 November 2008. The Commission intends to award the contract before the end of 2008, following the evaluation of the offers received. The contractor will have to carry out the study within 9 months from the signature of the contract. [04] CAP: Call for tender for a study on the provision of public goods through the EU Agriculture

The European Commission has launched a call for tender for a study concerning the provision of public goods through the European Union Agriculture. The aim of this study is to provide a description and an assessment of the provision of public goods through agriculture, based on a sound theoretical foundation, a review of the relevant literature and data sets, and empirical information taken from case studies. The maximum budget attributed to this project is € 500 000. The deadline for submitting offers expires on 10 November 2008. The Commission intends to award the contract before the end of 2008, following the evaluation of the offers received. The contractor will have to carry out the study within 10 months from the signature of the contract.
