  • [01] President Papoulias attends religious ceremony in Nydri

    resident Karolos Papoulias attended the religious ceremony at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary church in the city of Nydri, on the island of Lefkada, on Thursday.

    President Papoulias said it was a great day, a great celebration for Orthodoxy. He expressed the wish that it will also be the starting point for the Greek people to rid themselves of the burdens that they have been carrying for a long time.

    The President was welcomed in Nydri by Deputy Health Minister Antonis Bezas and Lefkada mayor Costas Aravanis.

    [02] PM Samaras in Pylos for Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebration

    Prime Minister Antonis Samaras celebrated the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in his home town of Pylos on Thursday, where he arrived with his family for a brief vacation.

    The prime minister, accompanied by his wife Georgia, attended a religious service at the Panagia Myrtidiotissa church, together with a large congregation.

    Samaras was welcomed at the church by Pylos-Nestoros mayor Dimitris Kafantaris and friends of his. He then paid his respects to the icon of the Virgin Mary and attended the religious ceremony that was officiated by Messinia Metropolitan Chrysostomos.

    The prime minister then exchanged wishes with local inhabitants and headed for the town's square, together with the metropolitan and friends.

    On Friday afternoon, Samaras will be attending an event organised by the Pylos-Nestoros municipality and the Cultural Society "To Navarino".

    [03] Navy ships in Tinos on occasion of Dormition of Virgin Mary celebration

    The frigate Hydra, the tank carrier Samos and the missile boat Laskos sailed into the port of Tinos on the occasion of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebration.

    The missile boat Mblessas also sailed into the port of Paros for the Panagia Ekatontapylianis celebration.

    Moreover, on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the sinking of the cruiser Elli in Tinos, Navy General Staff chief Vice Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis laid a wreath at the cenotaph for those who lost their lives and tossed a wreath into the sea from the missile boat Laskos at the location of the vessel's sinking.

    [04] Labour minister optimistic difficult moments can be overcome

    Labour Minister Yiannis Vroutsis, speaking on Thursday on the island of Tinos on the occasion of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebration, and representing the government, stressed that "all of us together can overcome the difficult moments with union of hearts, unity and solidarity and make Greece a pioneer again, meaning in the position it deserves".

    The minister said that "what we are feeling today is that our country is experiencing difficult moments. The sacrifices of the Greek people, however, will not be in vain".

    The Dormition of the Virgin Mary was celebrated on the island again this year in the presence of people from all over the country and from abroad.

    [05] Dormition of the Virgin Mary celebrated at Panagia Soumela

    Hundreds of visitors from Greece and all over the world participated in events held on Thursday for the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary at Panagia Soumela monastery in Kastania, in the northern prefecture of Imathia.

    The religious service was officiated by Veria, Naousa and Kampania metropolitan Panteleimon in the presence of dignitaries and a large congregation.

    The government was represented at the events by Macedonia-Thrace Minister Theodoros Karaoglou. Also present were Democratic Left party leader Fotis Kouvelis, Parliament second vice president George Kalantzis and party deputies and cadres.

    [06] Great risk of wildfires in central and northeastern regions on Friday

    The Civil Protection General Secretariat issued a warning on Thursday on the great risk of wildfires breaking out in regions of central and northeastern Greece on Friday.

    The regions include the Attica region, the regional entities of Evia, Sporades, Viotia, Fthiotida and Halkidiki and the islands of Skyros, Lesvos, Thasos and Samothraki.

    The Secretariat calls on people to avoid activities in the countryside that could cause a wildfire through negligence and endanger people's lives and property.

    It is reminded in this respect that throwing away lighted cigarettes is forbidden, as well as burning dry grass and branches and using machinery and tools causing sparks and barbecues.

    [07] Police launch manhunt for Velestino bank robbers

    Police have launched a manhunt in the prefecture of Magnisia, in central Greece, and in neighbouring prefectures to detect the perpetrators of a robbery at a National Bank branch office in the city of Velestino at noon on Wednesday, who made their getaway with an estimated 300,000 euros.

    According to testimonies, the robbery was carried out by four gunmen who were disguised. Speaking fluent Greek, they told the bank manager to open the safe, while eyewitnesses said they were calm and for as long as they were in the bank they reassured clients that they would not be harmed in any way.

    After placing the money in bags, the robbers left the premises initially on foot and then boarded a vehicle where an accomplice of theirs was probably waiting for them.

    [08] Man drowns in Neda river in Messinia

    A 33-year-old man from Aharnes, in the Attica prefecture, drowned in the Neda river, in the prefecture of Messinia in the Peloponnese, in his effort to cross it. The man, who was on holiday in Messinia with friends, went to the river at noon on Wednesday and then went missing.

    Frogmen found his body on the river bed early in the evening. The body was taken for an autopsy, while the Gargaliani fire department is conducting an investigation.

    [09] Tris Gefyres fire under control

    The fire breaking out in a two-storey building in the region of Tris Gefyres was reported under control on Thursday afternoon. According to firemen, the fire broke out on the terrace where an elderly couple was, while the man was slightly injured in his effort to extinguish the blaze and was hospitalised for treatment.

    Greece beat Austria 2-0 in a friendly soccer game played in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday evening. Greece's goals were both scored by Costas Mitroglou 39' and 67'.

    Rainy weather and northerly winds are forecast in most parts of the country on Friday. Winds 3-7 beaufort. Temperatures between 19C and 35C.
