MRB POLLNew Democracy is still ahead of Pasok with the voters. The latest MRB poll conducted for Antenna puts the opposition narrowly ahead of the ruling party.NEW DEMOCRACYNew Democracy leader Miltiades Evert seems to share the poll's view that his party has an edge over Pasok. "Our party is coming into the stretch and heading for victory", he said. He believes elections could come sooner than the autumn of 1997, when Pasok's term expires.And he's set up his party's election committee. After meeting with party vice president Iannis Varvitsiotis, and a phone conversation with Tzannis Tzannetakis, Evert name the election committee members. Tzannetakis will be the coordinator. Indicative of Evert's intentions as far as his internal opposition is concerned, is the fact that many MPs and political council members who have opposed him have also been named to the committee. Strong opponents of Evert, like Dora Bakoyianni and Sotiris Kouvelas are on it. At least seven MPs who singed a letter protesting Evert's leadership style several months ago ar on the election committee. MP Giorgos Panagiotopoulos says the committee composition is good. "Since New Democracy wants to go into the next elections united, everyone must take part in the drive to those elections". MP Alekos Desylas says, "When all our forces are united, and all points of view are developed, we'll get the best results". That's just what Evert is banking on. POLISHGreece is getting support from Poland over Turkey's aggressive behaviour in the Aegean. Turkey has questioned Greek sovereignty over Aegean islands on numerous occasions since January, and flexed its military muscle to get Greece to negotiate over its Aegean territory.In Athens, Polish foreign minister said Greece is right to be upset. Darius Rozati and his Greek host Theodoros Pangalos ushered in a new era in Greek-Polish relations, signing a friendship and cooperation agreement. The agreement is expected to tighten economic relations between the two countries. Rozati invited Greek businessmen to invest in Poland, which has a high seven per cent annual growth rate. Rozati showed solidarity with Greece over Turkey's provocative questioning of Greek rights over various Aegean islands. It would be unthinkable to change European borders today, he said. Poland, he added, believes that all countries, especially those who aspire to be members of the European family of nations, should observe international law and international treaties defining borders. States should not threaten to use force to get their way, he said. BUSHFormer US president George Bush was expected to arrive in Greece Thursday night, or Friday morning at the latest. Sources said he would be accompanied by general Colin Powell, former head of the US Chiefs of Staff.The two VIPs will be guests on the yacht Alexander, belonging to Greek billionaire Giannis Latsis. Bush has been Latsis's guest in Greece before.
