US ELECTION GREEKS

On the eve of the US elction, Greeks everywhere, and from all walks of life, reflected on what they'd like the next US administration to mean for Greece.

These are difficult times for conservatives, not just in the United States, but also in Greece. In the wake of its September general election loss, New Democracy is wracked by internal discord. The focus of the discontent is the issue of who should be party leader.

It was another week of taut nerves in Greece's main opposition party.

At the political council meeting Thursday night, New Democracy's top members approached each other in a more conciliatory spirit.

They agreed to a compromise on the congress delegates issue. Evert's insistence that there be NO local party elections will stand. BUT there will be MORE delegates sent to the congress. That pleases Evert's opponents. It has yet to be determined how they will be selected.

This week began with a tragedy at sea. A ferry boat leaving the island of Samos rammed into Greek naval warship, sending it to rest 160 metres beneathe the sea, just a kilometre off the coast of the island.

Four of the 38 crewmembers were lost, as the "Kostakos" sank within 15 minutes of being hit.
