ALBANIA REVIEWThe unrest continued in Albania all over this week, but the countries participating in the multinational military force to be sent there, worked on the last details of the dispatch.The Albania crisis was also the main issue discussed by the Greek foreign minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos and his Albanian counterpart, Sakir VoukAi Wednesday in Athens. The two men talked about the role of the ethnic greek minority in southern Albania. NILES REVIEWThe United States WILL intervene in case of a hot incident in the Aegean between Greece and Turkey, in order to prevent any escalation. That was said by the US ambassador in Athens Thomas Niles in his interview to Greek daily "To Vima".SIMITIS REVIEW"Social dialogue aims to get together all of the country's social groups on a number of issues", prime minister Kostas Simitis made clear Thursday night in a meeting of the Pasok party-and- government's common committee.The Pasok government intends to start talks with workers, trade unionists and pensioners on several matters, from bonuses, to overtime and pension age. ECONOMIST CONFERENCEGreek economy's modernisation and restructuring were the two matters highlihted by premier Kostas Simitis at the Economist International Conference, which was held in Athens this week.The prime minister addressed the Greek businessmen who attended the conference, calling them to contribute to the economy's development. "The government will firmly follow its belt- tightening economic policy", said Economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou, who also talked to the Conference. Pasok's economic policy was strongly criticised by the new leader of New Democracy, Kostas Karamanlis, at the same event. "Instead of the EU convergence", he said, "Greece is following a course of divergence". The Economist International Conference was attended by the governmental cabinet, foreign officials as well as by well-known Greek businessmen, among whom Antenna's president Minos Kyriakou. ECONOMY/TAX REVIEWAs part of its good housekeeping, Pasok has started a national campaign to crack down on tax-evasion, which is to become a criminal offence.Economy minister Yiannos Papantoniou inaugurated the Economic Offences Prosecution Service Thursday. One thousand tax inspectors will be on the road all over the country for tight controls in companies and businesses. They will also...carry guns. UNIVERSITY ELECTIONS REVIEWUniversity student elections were held this week and the big winner was surprisingly a decrease of last year's abstention rate by 10 per cent.It seemed that students responded to calls from student organisations for an active participation to the polls. There was a clear victory for New Democracy. New Democracy's student organisation pulled down nearly 39 per cent compared to 23 percent by Pasok. The secretary of the Pasok student organisation said that the winners were all of students, as there was a high rate of participation to the elections. Leader of New Democracy Kostas Karamanlis met with his party youth Thursday. He congratulated them for their victory and incited all of the country's youth to participate in public life. "Young people are the natural protagonists for Greece of tomorrow". ANTENNA PAGEANT REVIEWEvery year, Antenna organises Greece's biggest beauty contest, Miss Star Hellas.
