    The result of the recent general elections was a mandate by the people for the government to continue its work under better terms and at a faster pace, prime minister Costas Simitis told the first meeting of his ruling PASOK party's parliamentary group Thursday after the new parliament was sworn in.

    The new PASOK parliamentary group includes 44 new Deputies elected in the April 9 general election.

    [02] Gay Films Panorama

    A four-day Panorama of Gay Films opened Thursday in the northern Greek capital, organised by the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.

    The Panorama, financed by the Youth General Secretariat in cooperation with the Geothe Institute and the organisation Cooperation Against Homophobia, is being held for the second consecutive year.

    A total of 23 Greek and foreign short and feature films will be shown during the Panorama, some of which have received awards at international film festivals.

    The 300 deputies of Greece's new parliament that emerged from the April 9 general elections were sworn in Thursday morning by Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece and in the presence of President of the Republic Costis Stephanopoulos.

    [04] Earthquake-Igoumenitsa

    A weak earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale jolted the northwestern port town of Igoumenitsa early Thursday in Thesprotia prefecture, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
