  • [01] Balkan Youth Festival to be held in Greece August 15-18

    The 3rd Balkan Youth Festival will be held from August 15-18 in the municipalities of Litohoro, Katerini and Eastern Olympus in the prefecture of Pieria.

    Competing in the festival - in music, video and art - will be young people from 12 countries of the Balkans and of the broader region and specifically from Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Yugoslavia, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Moldavia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Romania, Slovenia and Turkey.

    Sunny weather is forecast in all parts of the country, with scattered cloud over the northern mainland from late afternoon that may turn to showers or storms. Winds northwesterly, light to moderate, turning strong in the south. In the north, temperatures will range from 17C to 33C; on the rest of the mainland from 20C to 35C; and in the islands from 23C to 32C. Temperatures in Athens between 23C and 35C; and in Thessaloniki between 21C and 32C.

    [03] Aegean to launch trial Alexandroupoli-Stuttgart flights

    Aegean Airlines SA is to arrange trial flights linking Alexandroupoli and Stuttgart over the Christmas holiday, the prefect of the northern Evros area, George Dolios, told reporters.

    If warranted by demand, the airline will run weekly flights to the German city the following summer, which would help to boost tourism in the border area, Dolios said.

    [05] Athens Bourse Close: Stocks slip, try to consolidate

    The Athens bourse finished slightly lower on Thursday in a bid to consolidate, despite rising markets elsewhere in Europe.

    The general share index shed 0.10 percent to end at 2,124.96 points. Turnover was 65.3 million euros.

    The FTSE/ASE-20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks ended 0.03 percent up; the FTSE/ASE-40 for medium capitalisation paper 0.21 percent lower; and the FTSE/ASE-80 for small cap equities 0.16 percent down.

    Of 360 stocks traded, declines led advances at 177 to 122 with 61 issues remaining unchanged.

    [06] August 'full moon' concerts at archaeological sites scheduled

    The culture ministry will again organise concerts at some 56 archaeological sites around the country in a few weeks to celebrate regal Augusts full moon scheduled for the evening of Aug. 22 leading into the early morning hours of Aug. 23.

    Sites will remain open from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., while the Acropolis in Athens, the Temple of Aphaia on the Saronic island of Aegina, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion and ancient Olympia will also remain open to the public, although no musical events are planned.

    Admission is free to all the concerts.
