Fourteen people were killed and eight injured early Sunday morning after an interstate bus traveling on the Athens to Thessaloniki route fell into a river in northern Greece.

A three-year child was also reported missing at press time.

Authorities have not released information as yet on how exactly the bus crashed through protective railing atop a bridge over the Aliakmonas River, west of Thessaloniki.

Some 100 firefighters and police officers were continuing a search effort in the early afternoon along the banks of the river amid sub-zero temperatures.

According to earlier reports, 23 passengers were traveling to Athens aboard the coach, while eyewitnesses said the bus veered into the opposition traffic lane and traveled some 40 metres before crashing into the rails and then 15 metres down into the river's freezing waters.

    Eight passengers were seriously injured.
