[01] PM calls for continued dialogue on security issues in Barcelona
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis underlined the need to continue
dialogue on defence and security issues in the Mediterranean region
during his address at the EuroMed Summit in Barcelona on Monday.
Karamanlis called for the creation of a zone of stability and security
in the wider Mediterranean region and unconditionally condemned all
forms of terrorism as criminal and unjustified, while noting the need
for international collaboration against terrorism in the framework of
international law.
On economic issues, the Greek premier referred to the establishment of
Free Trade Zones up to 2010 and the creation of a suitable investment
climate, as well as the adoption of an action programme in 2006 in
order to reduce pollution in the Mediterranean by the year 2020.
He also emphasised education, the fight against illiteracy, further
education for adults and international cooperation between
universities, as well as referring to issues of gender equality and
protection of children's rights.
Karamanlis spoke of the need to reinforce Euro-Mediterranean
cooperation in tackling immigration issues, especially illegal
immigration and the exploitation of immigrants by human trafficking
rings, which he said were responsible for destabilising society.
Finally, the Greek premier referred to the importance of dialogue
between cultures and to combat stereotypes, xenophobia and racism.
