[01] Roussopoulos lists gov't goals, successesMinister of State and government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos on Thursday stressed that "the adversaries of the new governance are only the problems, and our work is the weapon. We're devoted to honoring every chapter of our programme by the end of the four-year period."Roussopoulos spoke at an event organised by the Ioannina branch of the Constantine Karamanlis Institute of Democracy, entitled "Two years of new governance - Challenges and prospects." Roussopoulos referred to the effective decrease in deficits and the public debt, continuing high growth rates, a reduction of unemployment below 10 percent for the first time in years, a new development and tax law, as well as a new generation of privatisations and the better utilisation of the Community Support Framework funds. [02] President receives armed forces leadershipThe armed forces' leadership, following the latest round of promotions of top officers, met on Friday with President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias at the presidential mansion in the presence of Defence Minister Vangelis Meimarakis.In a brief address to the top officersâ corps, Papoulias noted that they will have to deal with both easy and difficult situations, "as we are facing an irritable neighbour". He was also briefed by the commander of the 4th army corps, Lt.-Gen. Petros Tsalikidis, about the situation in the flood-ravaged Evros Prefecture, in extreme north-east Greece.
